About AFK Cafe
AFK Cafe is a volunteer-led online community and third space where people come to build friendships, discover new interests, and find a place where they belong.
Unlike many Discord communities, we're not a gaming server. Gaming is just one of the many ways our members connect. Our community is built around people first.
Members spend time:
- Making new friends
- Talking about anime, books, movies, TV shows, art, music, and fandoms
- Playing games together
- Participating in themed events and seasonal celebrations
- Having meaningful discussions about life and shared interests
- Completing community quests and challenges
- Volunteering and developing leadership skills
- Simply having a welcoming place to spend time outside of work, school, and home

About the Role
Community Engagement Hosts are the heart of member connection at AFK Cafe.
Rather than moderating rule violations, your role is to help members feel welcomed, included, and connected with others.
Many of our members are naturally introverted, socially anxious, or simply unsure how to join conversations. Community Engagement Hosts help bridge that gap by creating opportunities for friendships to form naturally.
One thing we'd like to emphasize:
You do not need to be an extrovert to excel in this role.
Much like our community, many members of our moderation and leadership team are introverts—you probably wouldn't know it. What makes someone successful isn't being the loudest person in the room; it's genuinely caring about making others feel welcomed and included.
Responsibilities
Welcome New Members
- Welcome new members into the community.
- Read introductions.
- Learn about members' interests.
- Connect members with others who share similar hobbies.
- Help members discover conversations they'll enjoy.
Foster Community Engagement
- Read weekly Roll Call responses.
- Use what members share to spark conversations throughout the week.
- Ask engaging discussion questions.
- Respond to member posts.
- Tag members into conversations they may enjoy.
- Help quieter members feel comfortable participating.
- Encourage meaningful conversations that build lasting relationships.
Support Community Events
Help create excitement around everything happening at AFK Cafe by:
- Reminding members about quests and community events.
- Rallying members to participate.
- Building excitement before events.
- Participating in themed events and getting into character when appropriate.
- Helping create a fun and festive atmosphere.
Stream Engagement
When available:
- Welcome viewers.
- Help keep livestream chat active.
- Encourage discussion.
Voice chat participation is completely optional. This is primarily a text-based volunteer position.
Who We're Looking For
Ideal volunteers:
- Enjoy getting to know people.
- Naturally make others feel included.
- Like asking questions.
- Enjoy conversations about hobbies, books, games, anime, art, movies, television, and fandoms.
- Are dependable and communicative.
- Want to help build a welcoming online community.
No previous moderation experience is required.
Kindness, curiosity, empathy, and consistency are far more important.

Application Process
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with AFK Cafe!
Step 1: Visit our Community Guide to learn more about our mission, community, and volunteer opportunities:
Step 2: Complete our volunteer application.
Step 3: If your application appears to be a good fit, you'll receive an email with invitations to:
- Join the AFK Cafe Discord Community
- Enroll in the AFK Cafe Contribution Academy, where you'll complete your onboarding and training
You'll also receive a Discord friend request from the Founder, who will be available to answer questions, help you get settled, and guide you through your first steps as a volunteer.
Step 4: Once you're in the community, you'll:
- Complete the Community Engagement Host onboarding program.
- Learn about our mission, values, community culture, and volunteer expectations.
- Be paired with a mentor for guidance and support.
- Begin a 90-day exploration period, where you'll receive ongoing feedback and have the opportunity to learn, grow, and determine whether the role is a good fit for you.
At the end of the exploration period, we'll check in together to reflect on your experience, celebrate your progress, and discuss your continued journey within AFK Cafe.
We're looking for kind, dependable people who genuinely enjoy helping others feel welcomed and connected. Previous community management or moderation experience is not required—empathy, curiosity, and consistency are far more important.
A Discord account is required, as all volunteer communication, training, and community engagement take place through our Discord community.
