Meals on Wheels Central Texas (MOWCTX), a nonprofit dedicated to ending senior hunger and isolation in Central Texas, is seeking organized, people-centered volunteers to serve as Universal Intake Specialist Volunteers. This role is a critical first point of contact for individuals seeking services from MOWCTX programs.
About the opportunity
As a Universal Intake Specialist Volunteer, you'll conduct phone-based intake assessments to determine whether applicants are eligible for MOWCTX programs, guide them through the process, and connect them to the support they need. Your work directly reduces wait times and helps older adults, people with disabilities, and low-income community members access meals and services faster.
This role is a great fit for volunteers with a background in administrative work, call center or customer service, social services, or healthcare intake and for anyone who wants hands-on experience in how community-based programs assess need and connect people to resources.
Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough phone-based intake assessments and evaluate applicant eligibility based on established program guidelines
- Educate applicants, caregivers, and referrers about available programs and guide them through the intake process
- Maintain accurate, confidential records of assessments including demographic information and results
- Coordinate with MOWCTX staff to connect applicants to ongoing services following intake
- Stay informed about changes in program eligibility criteria and local community resources
- Assist with meal delivery, meal management, or office support as needed based on program needs
Requirements
- Strong verbal and phone communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook; Salesforce or CRM experience preferred
- Strong data entry, documentation, organizational, and time management skills
- Comfortable working independently and collaboratively in a changing environment
- Familiarity with Austin-area social service resources, or willingness to learn
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow agency privacy policies
- Completed volunteer application with valid government ID
- Willingness to complete required onboarding, training, and background check if applicable
Time commitment
- Minimum 3 hours per shift; approximately 3 days and 15 hours per week total (multiple volunteers can share this need)
- Consistent schedule and timely communication about availability required
Location
Onsite at MOWCTX Central Office, 3227 E. 5th Street, Austin, TX 78702. Hybrid schedule may be available after training is complete.
Development opportunities
- Hands-on experience in social services intake and community-based program eligibility
- Strengthened communication and active listening skills with vulnerable populations
- Deep knowledge of local resources available to older adults, people with disabilities, and low-income Austinites
- Direct community impact helping neighbors access meals and support faster
