About:
Norwood Crossing is a non-profit senior living community located in Chicago's Norwood Park neighborhood. Our residential campus specializes in assisted living, skilled nursing, rehab, respite stays, and memory support (including Alzheimer's and dementia care). For over 100 years, we have been dedicated to enhancing the independence and well-being of older adults.
We're looking for a volunteer for our Memory Support Unit to keep residents company by leading engaging, social activities. Examples include tossing a ball, listening to music and discussing it, participating in group conversations, or guiding simple seated exercises.
Time Commitment:
Minimum once a week at the same time every week. Day of the week is flexible, but mornings are preferred.
Responsibilities and Expectations:
- Lead interactive activities for Memory Support residents, such as light movement, music listening, and conversation-based engagement.
- Partner with the Director of Memory Support to plan appropriate activities and communicate any material or setup needs.
Qualifications:
- Must be passionate about volunteering, friendly, patient, and considerate.
- Must be able to work with residents who have Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.
- Able to work independently and collaborate with staff members.
- Strong communication skills.
- Able to safely transport residents in their wheelchairs if needed (training provided).
- Able to commit to arriving on time. Advance notice of absences is most helpful for residents and staff.
- Interpersonal flexibility and ability to take direction from staff.
Benefits of your Commitment:
- You will make a difference in the lives of our senior residents.
- Have fun and build meaningful connections with residents, staff, and fellow volunteers.
- Enjoy a free lunch in the employee lunchroom.
- Receive 25% off at our Thrift Shop
