The Heart of Art is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to using the performing arts as a gateway to foster literacy, education, creativity, and community building. We empower children and youth through programs that combine the magic of storytelling with the transformative power of the arts.
- Term of Service-April 1, 2026 – April 1, 2028 (Two-Year Term)
- Annual Board Contribution-Give-or-Get Requirement: $1,000 per year
- Location Preference- DMV residents strongly preferred (Washington, DC; Maryland; Virginia)
General Expectations
All board members are expected to actively participate in governance, attend meetings, support fundraising, maintain confidentiality, and provide strategic guidance for organizational growth.
The Secretary is responsible for ensuring the Board of Directors operates with strong organizational integrity, transparency, and compliance. This role manages documentation, meeting records, and governance communication, helping The Heart of Art maintain an effective and accountable board structure. This role works closely with the Board Chair and the Executive Director.
Key Responsibilities
Documentation & Recordkeeping
- Record accurate minutes for all board meetings
- Maintain board attendance records and voting documentation
- Organize official governance files, including bylaws, policies, and resolutions Bylaws- HOA Inaugural Year
Communication & Board Operations
- Distribute meeting agendas, minutes, and key documents in advance
- Ensure board members are informed of upcoming meetings, deadlines, and action items
- Support onboarding materials and annual board calendar planning
Compliance Support
- Assist in ensuring governance documents remain current and accessible
- Support organizational compliance with state and nonprofit reporting requirements
Organizational Partnership
- Collaborate with the Chair and Executive Director to maintain strong board operations
- Provide administrative leadership that supports organizational stability
Qualifications
- Strong organizational, writing, and communication skills
- Grant Writing Experience
- Experience with documentation, administration, or nonprofit governance preferred
- Comfort using Google Drive and virtual meeting tools
- DMV residency preferred
- JD, LLM, MLS, MSL, or SJD- Preferred Education
Time Commitment
Approximately 20 hours/month
