What You’ll Do
The Volunteer Pharmacy Clerk supports the daily operations of the nonprofit clinic’s pharmacy by assisting pharmacists and pharmacy staff with patient services, administrative, clerical, and inventory-related tasks. This role helps ensure accurate medication dispensing, efficient workflow, and compassionate service to underserved patients. The Volunteer Pharmacy Clerk plays an important part in advancing the organization’s mission to improve access to affordable healthcare.
Key Responsibilities
Administrative & Clerical Support
- Greet patients and assist with pharmacy check-in and point of sale procedures
- Answer and route phone calls professionally
- File prescriptions and maintain organized records (paper and/or electronic)
- Verify patient information, insurance details, and payment methods under supervision.
- Assist with scanning and document management
Inventory & Medication Support
- Order inventory, stock shelves, and maintain organized medication storage areas
- Assist with inventory counts and expiration date checks
- Report low stock levels or discrepancies to pharmacy staff
- Label, sort, and prepare medication packaging for delivery under pharmacist supervision
Patient Support
- Provide courteous, respectful service to patients
- Direct patients to appropriate clinic services as needed
- Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations
Compliance & Safety
- Follow clinic policies, pharmacy regulations, and safety procedures
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of pharmacy workspaces
- Participate in volunteer orientation and required training
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Professional communication skills
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
- Comfortable working in a clinical environment
Preferred
- Interest in healthcare, pharmacy, nursing, or medical professions
- Bilingual skills (if applicable to patient population)
- Previous clerical or healthcare experience
Volunteer Details
- Age Requirement: 18+
- Commitment: Minimum of 6 months
- Schedule: At least one regular weekly shift, M-TH
