    About us:

The Humane Choices Foundation is a registered nonprofit organization based in Ontario, Canada, dedicated to protecting and defending the inherent rights of all animals. Through advocacy, education, and direct action, we promote compassion, respect, and ethical treatment for all living beings.

Our vision is to build a professional, sustainable, and compassionate organization that reflects the values we champion — kindness, empathy, and integrity. To support our growing team and expanding initiatives, we are seeking a Human Resources Manager (Volunteer) to establish and manage HR systems, policies, and volunteer engagement programs for the Foundation.

    Position Overview

The Human Resources Manager (Volunteer) will play a key leadership role in shaping The Humane Choices Foundation’s people strategy and organizational culture.

This position will develop HR policies, volunteer management frameworks, onboarding systems, and engagement initiatives to support staff and volunteers working across Canada and globally. The ideal candidate will bring HR expertise, strategic thinking, and a deep belief in compassionate leadership.

As one of the Foundation’s senior volunteer roles, the HR Manager will help build a strong, transparent, and ethical organizational structure — ensuring compliance, professionalism, and a positive experience for all team members.

    Key Responsibilities

    Strategic HR Development

    • Develop and implement HR policies, procedures, and systems consistent with the Foundation’s mission, values, and legal obligations.
    • Advise leadership on workforce planning, recruitment strategies, and role development for volunteers and future staff.
    • Create frameworks that foster diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within the organization.
    • Support the Executive Director and Board in aligning HR practices with long-term organizational strategy.

    Volunteer Recruitment & Engagement

    • Lead recruitment campaigns for volunteers across different departments (Communications, Education, Digital, Operations, etc.).
    • Develop onboarding and orientation programs that ensure alignment with the Foundation’s mission and culture.
    • Maintain accurate volunteer records, agreements, and performance tracking systems.
    • Implement recognition programs and engagement activities to motivate and retain volunteers.

    Policy & Compliance

    • Draft and maintain HR policies covering recruitment, code of conduct, conflict of interest, anti-harassment, confidentiality, and grievance procedures.
    • Ensure compliance with Ontario and Canadian nonprofit employment and volunteer regulations.
    • Oversee the implementation of safety, privacy, and data protection policies related to personnel information.
    • Regularly review and update policies in line with changing legal and ethical standards.

    Training & Development

    • Identify skill development opportunities for volunteers and future staff.
    • Organize or coordinate training in humane leadership, conflict resolution, communications, and advocacy.
    • Support team-building efforts to promote collaboration and empathy-driven leadership.

    Advisory & Leadership

    • Serve as an HR advisor to the Executive Director and department heads.
    • Participate in leadership meetings to ensure HR strategies support operational and programmatic needs.
    • Mediate interpersonal or performance concerns respectfully and confidentially.
    • Provide guidance on organizational structure, succession planning, and internal communication.

    Qualifications & Skills

    Required

    • Previous experience in Human Resources, volunteer management, or nonprofit administration.
    • Knowledge of Ontario/Canada employment standards, volunteer management principles, and HR compliance frameworks.
    • Strong communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
    • Ability to build trust, maintain confidentiality, and uphold ethical standards.
    • Excellent organizational and documentation skills.
    • Passion for animal rights, humane education, and ethical leadership.

    Preferred

    • Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation or HR studies in progress.
    • Experience working in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.
    • Knowledge of HR software or volunteer management systems (e.g., Zoho People, Airtable, or Trello).
    • Experience in recruitment, training, and policy development.

    What You’ll Gain

    • A leadership opportunity to design and implement HR systems from the ground up for a growing national nonprofit.
    • Experience in nonprofit HR management, governance, and organizational development.
    • Collaboration with a compassionate, professional, and visionary leadership team.
    • Recognition on the Foundation’s website, communications materials, and leadership network.
    • The opportunity to make a meaningful impact by helping shape an ethical and sustainable organization dedicated to animal protection and humane education.
