Playgroup Volunteer

Found in Translation is a Boston-based nonprofit organization that offers free medical interpreter training to low-income bilingual women. The program participants hail from a wide array of cultures and languages.

One of the most important supportive services we provide for our participants is free, on-site childcare during our training and continuing education events. We are seeking energetic and enthusiastic childcare volunteers to serve as playgroup leaders by supervising young children who generally can range in age from 1 to 12 years. Playgroup leaders ensure a fun, safe environment while their mothers are taking part in classes or other Found in Translation events.

We currently need playgroup volunteers who can be available during our spring medical interpreter training, taking place in Malden on Thursday evenings from January-June 2026. The class schedule includes breaks throughout the program cycle, so there will be weeks off for volunteers. We also welcome volunteers who may not be able to commit to a weekly schedule, but who could be available to engage with children during other Found in Translation events, such as continuing education seminars or program celebrations.

Ideal candidates will be extremely responsible, independent, warm, friendly, culturally sensitive, and have experience working with children. S/he will work in pairs with at least one other volunteer for a group of 4-10 children per shift, playing games, helping with homework, and enforcing all safety rules. It is advantageous to be adaptable, creative, and comfortable with a wide range of children's needs and personalities.

Volunteers play a crucial role in the success of each Found in Translation student as they work towards furthering their interpreting education. Members of the Found in Translation community are extremely grateful for the significant contribution of our volunteer teammates.
