There is no single way to be a great hospice volunteer. Summa Health
Hospice offers a wide variety of volunteer pathways so you can choose
meaningful service based on your interests, skills, comfort level, and
availability.
Whether you enjoy spending time one-on-one with people, reading,
creating art, crafts, sewing, cooking, making phone calls, supporting
Veterans, helping behind the scenes, or sharing a special talent,
there may be a place for you in our volunteer community.
VOLUNTEER PATHWAY OPTIONS
- Patient Companionship — Provide friendly conversation, social
connection, and a caring presence.
- Reading Companion / Book Therapy — Read aloud, enjoy books together,
and create meaningful connection through stories.
- Caregiver Respite — Spend time with a patient while a caregiver
takes a needed break.
- Tuck-In Calls — Make supportive phone calls to patients and families
to help identify needs before weekends.
- Volunteer Program Introduction Calls — Welcome newly admitted
patients and families and introduce available volunteer services.
- 11th Hour Support — Provide a calm, compassionate presence for
patients and families near the end of life.
- Legacy Connections — Help patients preserve memories through
journals, photos, videos, voice recordings, collages, and other legacy projects.
- Letters for Tomorrow — Help patients create letters for future
birthdays, weddings, graduations, milestones, and special moments.
- Music Support — Share music, singing, instruments, playlists, or
musical connection.
- Art & Creative Projects — Help create meaningful art, crafts,
keepsakes, painted rocks, handprint/fingerprint projects, clay crafts,
photo collages, resin photo magnets, and other family-centered
projects.
- Pet Therapy — Provide comfort and connection through approved
pet-therapy visits.
- Veteran Volunteers — Support and recognize Veterans, including
participation in Veteran recognition and pinning ceremonies.
- Nurse Recognition & Pinning — Help honor nurses through our
recognition/pinning activities.
- Reiki — Offer approved comfort-focused Reiki support.
- Bereavement Support — Assist with outreach, remembrance activities,
and bereavement programming.
- Card Makers — Create cards and thoughtful messages for patients and families.
- Sewing Hope for Hospice — Sew bereavement keepsake pillows and other
comfort items.
- Caring Cuisine / Meal Support — Help with holiday meal preparation
and delivery, quarterly cookies, cupcakes, and other sweet treats for patient
birthdays, anniversaries, Veteran pinnings, nurse pinnings,
and special occasions.
- Helping Hands — Assist with seasonal and practical non-medical projects.
- Hairdresser & Barber Volunteers — Share approved grooming services
that help patients feel cared for and connected.
- Office & Administrative Support — Help with clerical projects,
organization, mailings, phone support, and other office needs.
- Community Outreach & Special Events — Help represent and support the
volunteer program through community activities and special projects.
- Creative & Behind-the-Scenes Opportunities — Contribute your talents
without providing direct patient care.
