    Job Title: Editor-in-cheif/newsroom Director – National Wildfire Tracking Team (NWTT)

    Location: Remote / Hybrid (U.S.)

    Type: Volunteer / Leadership Role

    About NWTT:

    The National Wildfire Tracking Team (NWTT) delivers real-time wildfire and severe weather mapping, alerts, and field coordination to help communities, responders, and families stay safe. We combine technology, on-the-ground operations, and community engagement to improve disaster outcomes. NWTT is expanding its newsroom to provide accurate, timely, and actionable reporting during wildfire events and extreme weather.

    Role Overview:

    The Editor-in-cheif/Newsroom Director will lead the development, management, and strategic growth of the NWTT Newsroom. This is a high-impact leadership role responsible for building systems, workflows, and a team capable of producing real-time reporting on wildfires, severe weather, and related emergencies.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Build & Lead the Newsroom: Recruit, train, and manage a team of reporters, correspondents, and volunteer staff.
    • Editorial Oversight: Set standards for accuracy, verification, and reporting style; approve content before publication.
    • Operations Management: Develop real-time reporting workflows, communication protocols, and monitoring systems for active wildfire and weather events.
    • Strategy & Growth: Expand the newsroom’s reach and capabilities, including multi-platform reporting (web, social media, live streams).
    • Collaboration: Work closely with NWTT technology, mapping, and field operations teams to ensure timely, accurate reporting.
    • Crisis Leadership: Provide guidance during major wildfire events or other disasters, maintaining calm, accurate reporting under pressure.

    Qualifications:

    • Proven experience in newsroom leadership, editorial management, or crisis reporting.
    • Strong understanding of wildfire and severe weather reporting preferred.
    • Experience building teams, workflows, and operational systems from scratch.
    • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
    • Ability to work under high-pressure, time-sensitive situations.
    • Volunteer-friendly mindset with a passion for public safety and community service.
