Position Overview
Surmount is seeking passionate and committed Board Members to help guide our growing organization. As a member of the Board of Directors, you will play a vital role in shaping Surmount’s strategic vision, ensuring financial health, and championing our mission in the community. We are looking for leaders with diverse professional and lived experiences who want to use their skills to make a lasting impact.
Board Members will provide governance and oversight, serve as ambassadors for Surmount, and contribute expertise to strengthen our organization’s sustainability and reach.

Key Responsibilities
Governance & Leadership
- Provide strategic guidance and oversight to advance Surmount’s mission and goals.
- Participate actively in Board meetings, committee work, and organizational decision-making.
- Ensure compliance with Surmount’s bylaws and relevant nonprofit governance requirements.
Financial Stewardship
- Review and approve annual budgets, financial statements, and key fiscal policies.
- Monitor organizational performance and sustainability, offering expertise in risk management and resource allocation.
- Support fundraising efforts by making a personally meaningful contribution and encouraging others to give.
Community Engagement & Advocacy
- Act as an ambassador for Surmount in personal and professional networks.
- Strengthen Surmount’s community partnerships by connecting the organization with potential supporters, funders, and collaborators.
- Advocate for Surmount’s mission and values in the broader community.
Organizational Support
- Contribute skills and expertise (financial, legal, programmatic, communications, etc.) to support organizational initiatives.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to Surmount’s leadership team as needed.
- Help identify opportunities for growth, innovation, and impact.
Experience & Qualifications
- Demonstrated leadership experience in one or more fields such as finance, community development, law, nonprofit governance, business, communications, education, or public service.
- Strong commitment to equity, inclusion, and Surmount’s mission and values.
- Willingness to actively participate in fundraising, resource development, and advocacy.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Prior nonprofit board service is a plus but not required.
Time Commitment
- Attend bi-monthly board meetings and actively serve on at least one committee.
- Contribute an estimated 5–10 hours per month, including meeting preparation, committee work, and advocacy.
