About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a NYC-based nonprofit serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning, and creative expression. At MAP, accessibility is not an afterthought—it is a core responsibility and ethical commitment.

MAP’s programs, educational materials, books, media, events, and physical spaces are designed with accessibility at the forefront, ensuring that all children and youth can participate fully, safely, and with dignity.

Role Overview

The Physical Accessibility Coordinator supports MAP’s Disability Justice & Accessibility Team by assessing and strengthening physical accessibility across MAP’s programs, spaces, and in-person experiences. This role works in close collaboration with the Digital Accessibility Coordinator and Sensory Accessibility Coordinator to ensure a holistic, integrated approach to accessibility.

The Coordinator conducts department-by-department physical accessibility audits, prepares clear summaries of strengths and improvement areas, and supports departments in implementing practical, dignity-centered accessibility solutions—especially when structural changes are not immediately possible.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess physical accessibility across MAP programming, including:
  • Housing-related spaces
  • In-person events
  • Classrooms and learning environments
• Evaluate factors such as:
  • Physical access and mobility considerations
  • Navigation, layout, and spatial usability
  • Barriers to participation in physical environments
• Prepare clear summaries highlighting:
  • Accessibility strengths
  • Areas for improvement
• Collaborate with the Accessibility Team to produce biweekly, holistic accessibility reports that integrate digital, physical, and sensory findings
• Teach a designated member of each department how to improve physical accessibility when infrastructure changes are not feasible
• Serve as a physical accessibility resource for MAP volunteers and staff
• Uphold Universal Design principles and accessibility standards
• Assist in selecting spaces for physical events with accessibility considerations in mind
• Participate in weekly Disability Justice Team check-ins to track audit progress

Qualifications

• Strong commitment to accessibility and disability justice
• Willingness to learn and grow in physical accessibility practices
• Ability to synthesize accessibility guidance in a clear, approachable manner
• Reliability, creativity, and comfort working collaboratively
• Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values

Preferred Skills

• Experience advocating for disabled individuals and/or lived experience as a disabled person
• Familiarity with ADA standards and physical accessibility considerations
• Knowledge of Universal Design principles
• Experience collaborating with diverse teams (e.g., legal, writing, training, program teams)

Commitment

• Volunteer role
• Approximately 5–10 hours per week
• Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
• Fully remote with optional NYC-based collaboration
