Would you like to help someone in your community prepare for their naturalization interview and achieve their dream of becoming a U.S. citizen?
Join us as a volunteer tutor with Heartland Human Care Services! Our dedicated volunteers work one-on-one or in small groups with adult learners from all around the world to practice English, review civics questions, and build confidence for their interviews.
No teaching experience is required — just patience, empathy, and a desire to make a difference. We provide free tutor training, in-service workshops, and ongoing staff support to help you feel confident and prepared.
🕓 Time commitment: 1–3 hours per week for at least 3 months (longer service is very appreciated!)
📍 Where: In-person and virtual options available
🎓 Training: Free, self-paced online course and ongoing professional development
🤝 Support: All materials and guidance provided
Volunteer Requirements:
- Complete an initial phone interview and volunteer application
- Sign a volunteer service agreement
- Complete DCFS Mandated Reporter training and sign the acknowledgement form
- Pass a background check (approximately $25 fee)
- Complete Tutor Essentials online training (free and self-paced)
- Be at least 18 years old and a high school graduate
- Live or work in Illinois (per funder guidelines)
