    About the Museum

The Pikes Peak Children’s Museum (PPCM) is a vibrant, growing nonprofit dedicated to enriching the lives of children and families through hands-on, educational experiences. As a mobile museum, PPCM brings dynamic, play-based learning directly to schools, parks, and community events across the Pikes Peak region.

We're on an exciting journey to expand our impact — and ultimately develop a permanent museum space. We're seeking a visionary Volunteer Executive Director to lead this next phase of growth.

    Position Summary

The Volunteer Executive Director (ED) will serve as the strategic and operational leader of PPCM, working in close partnership with the Board of Directors. This role is ideal for a community-minded, entrepreneurial leader who thrives in startup environments and is passionate about children’s education and community engagement.

Initially a volunteer position, the role is expected to transition to a paid stipend-based position in 2026, based on successful fundraising and organizational milestones.

    Key Responsibilities

    Leadership & Strategic Growth

    • Lead the planning and implementation of the museum’s strategic direction.
    • Collaborate with the Board to refine and execute a long-term vision for a permanent museum facility.
    • Serve as a public spokesperson and community advocate for the museum’s mission.

    Fundraising & Development

    • Drive all fundraising efforts including donor cultivation, grant writing, sponsorships, and events.
    • Develop a sustainable funding model to support operations and eventual executive compensation.
    • Oversee planning and execution of PPCM’s annual NYE event and capital campaigns.

    Programs & Operations

    • Oversee mobile museum programs, logistics, and delivery to ensure quality, accessibility, and educational value.
    • Coordinate exhibit design and partnerships to enhance mobile offerings.
    • Ensure safety standards and policies are upheld during all events and mobile deployments.

    Financial Management

    • Develop and manage annual budgets in partnership with the Board Treasurer.
    • Monitor financial health, ensure accurate reporting, and comply with grant/funding requirements.
    • Support preparation of the IRS 990 and nonprofit compliance documentation.

    Community & Public Relations

    • Act as the face of PPCM in the community, forming partnerships with schools, nonprofits, businesses, and media.
    • Expand the museum’s visibility through marketing, social media, and regular community engagement.

    Board Engagement & Volunteer Management

    • Collaborate closely with the Board of Directors to advance strategic priorities.
    • Recruit, manage, and inspire volunteers and future staff.
    • Assist in board development and orientation of new members.

    Qualifications

    • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in; Education, Museum Sciences or related relevant field.
      • Familiarity with museum or education programming in Pikes Peak Region (preferred).
    • Passion for children’s education, museums, and community outreach.
    • Proven leadership and nonprofit management experience.
    • Demonstrated success in fundraising, grant writing, and relationship-building.
    • Strong project management, communication, and organizational skills.
    • Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to lead in a startup or growth-phase nonprofit.
    • Must reside in or be able to travel regularly within the Pikes Peak region.

    Time Commitment & Compensation

    • Current Status: Volunteer (Estimated 20 hours per week with flexibility).
    • Future Goal: Transition to a stipend-paid Executive Director position in 2026, contingent on fundraising success and organizational growth.
    • Travel within the region is required; occasional evenings/weekends.
    • Must past a background check.
