    Descrição

Pro Bono Immigration Attorney / Legal Advisor – Support Swahili-Speaking Immigrants

    Description

The New York Tanzanian Community (NYTC) is a volunteer-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving Swahili-speaking immigrant families and international students from Tanzania and the broader African community across New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut.

In the current climate of increased immigration enforcement, policy changes, and widespread fear within immigrant communities, many Swahili-speaking individuals and families face uncertainty about their rights, legal options, and available protections. Language barriers, limited access to culturally relevant legal information, and misinformation can leave community members vulnerable and hesitant to seek help.

NYTC is seeking a Pro Bono Immigration Attorney or Legal Advisor to support our efforts to provide accurate, trusted, and accessible immigration-related information and guidance to the community. This role focuses on education, rights awareness, and referrals, helping community members better understand immigration processes, protections, and resources available to them.

This opportunity is ideal for someone passionate about immigration justice, human rights, and community empowerment, who wants to use their legal knowledge to support underserved immigrant communities in a meaningful and ethical way.

    Responsibilities may include:

    1. Providing general legal guidance on immigration-related topics affecting immigrant families and international students
    2. Supporting the development or review of “know your rights” materials and community education resources
    3. Advising NYTC leadership on best practices, referral pathways, and partnerships with legal aid organizations
    4. Participating in occasional virtual information sessions or consultations, as available

This role is advisory and educational in nature. The volunteer is not required to provide individual legal representation unless they choose to do so independently.

    Qualifications:

    • Licensed immigration attorney, legal professional, or advanced law student with relevant experience
    • Knowledge of U.S. immigration law and immigrant rights
    • Cultural humility and sensitivity when working with immigrant and Swahili-speaking communities
    • Strong communication skills and a commitment to justice and equity

This is a remote, flexible, pro bono volunteer opportunity, with time commitment based on availability and mutual agreement. By volunteering with NYTC, you will help strengthen community trust, reduce fear through accurate information, and support immigrant families in navigating complex systems with dignity and confidence.
