Grocery Rescue -Truck Ride-A-Long

Help bring rescued food from local grocery partners back to UCOM, where it can be sorted and shared with neighbors. As a Grocery Rescue Truck Ride-Along Volunteer, you’ll accompany a staff member on scheduled pickup routes and assist with loading, unloading, and safely transporting donated food.

In this role, you will:

• Ride along with a staff member to pick up rescued food donations from local grocery partners
• Help load boxes, bags, crates, and other food donations onto the truck
• Help unload donated food at UCOM and move it into designated storage areas
• Use carts, dollies, and other available equipment to safely move heavier items
• Help sort donations by storage needs, including refrigerated, frozen, and shelf-stable items
• Help keep the truck and receiving area clean, organized, and free of hazards
• Represent UCOM professionally and courteously when interacting with grocery-partner staff
• Follow staff directions, food-safety standards, and safe lifting practices throughout the route
• Assist with brief set-up and clean-up before and after pickups

Position requirements

• Able to safely lift and carry up to 50 lbs, with assistance or equipment when appropriate
• Comfortable bending, reaching, standing, walking, and riding in a truck during the shift
• Able to work outdoors and in varying weather conditions during pickups
• Comfortable working in refrigerated or freezer areas for short periods, when needed
• Reliable transportation to the designated starting location and dependable attendance
• Able to communicate respectfully with staff, volunteers, and grocery-partner representatives
• Willing to follow food-safety procedures and staff instructions
