Data Governance & Compliance Manager (Volunteer)

Operations | Privacy, Data & Compliance

    Organization: Mentor A Promise (MAP)

Location: Remote with NYC-based coordination as needed

Type: Volunteer (Senior Data Governance & Compliance Role)

    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning, creative expression, and technology-supported programs.

MAP works with highly sensitive data related to children, families, volunteers, educators, and partners. Strong data governance, privacy, and compliance practices are essential to maintaining trust, safety, and legal responsibility.

    Role Overview

The Data Governance & Compliance Manager (Volunteer) is responsible for strengthening MAP’s data governance framework and ensuring compliance with applicable privacy, safeguarding, and data protection standards.

This role operates within Operations and works closely with Legal/Compliance, IT, Program leadership, and the Privacy & Digital Trust Advisory Council to ensure that data practices are ethical, lawful, well-documented, and aligned with MAP’s mission and duty of care to children and families.

This is a senior volunteer role focused on policy, structure, and oversight—not day-to-day data entry.

    Key Responsibilities

    Data Governance

    • Develop and maintain MAP’s data governance framework, including policies for data collection, access, retention, and disposal
    • Define data ownership, stewardship, and access controls across departments
    • Support ethical, trauma-informed handling of youth and family data

    Compliance & Privacy

    • Support compliance with applicable laws and standards (e.g., COPPA, FERPA, state privacy laws, nonprofit best practices)
    • Coordinate with Legal/Compliance on privacy policies, consent frameworks, and disclosures
    • Ensure alignment with MAP’s child-safety, safeguarding, and confidentiality requirements

    Risk Management & Oversight

    • Identify data-related risks and recommend mitigation strategies
    • Support incident preparedness and response planning related to data breaches or misuse
    • Maintain documentation to support audits, funder reviews, and internal assessments

    Cross-Functional Coordination

    • Partner with Operations, IT, Programs, and Research teams to embed compliant data practices into workflows
    • Support training or guidance for staff and volunteers on responsible data handling
    • Coordinate with the Privacy & Digital Trust Advisory Council as needed

    Qualifications

    • Experience in data governance, privacy compliance, risk management, or information management
    • Strong understanding of data protection principles and consent-based practices
    • Ability to translate legal and technical requirements into practical policies
    • High attention to detail, documentation, and accountability
    • Comfort working with cross-functional teams in a nonprofit environment
    • Alignment with MAP’s mission, ethics, and child-centered values

    Preferred Backgrounds

    • Data governance, compliance, privacy, or information security roles
    • Nonprofit, education, healthcare, or youth-serving organizations
    • Familiarity with COPPA, FERPA, or youth data protection frameworks
    • Experience supporting audits or regulatory reviews

    Commitment

    • Volunteer senior leadership role within Operations
    • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Remote with NYC-based coordination as needed

    What You’ll Gain

    • Senior-level experience shaping data governance and compliance strategy
    • Direct impact on protecting children, families, and community trust
    • Collaboration with legal, technology, and executive leadership
    • Professional references and letters of recommendation
    • The opportunity to help build a gold-standard data protection framework in the nonprofit sector

    How to Apply

Interested candidates must apply directly through Idealist and submit:

    • Resume (required)
    • Cover letter (required) describing relevant experience in data governance, privacy, or compliance

Help protect trust, dignity, and safety—by ensuring MAP’s data practices are ethical, compliant, and worthy of the communities we serve.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with our organization. At this time, volunteer opportunities are limited to individuals based in the United States due to legal, safeguarding, data-privacy, and programmatic requirements. We appreciate your interest in our mission and your understanding of these constraints.
