Communications Manager (Volunteer, Remote)
About A Free Bird
A Free Bird is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering children affected by cancer through the arts. We use storytelling, media, and outreach to amplify the voices and creativity of the children we serve while increasing awareness of our mission.
Position Overview
The Communications Manager oversees the execution of A Free Bird’s communications strategy across digital and traditional platforms. This role works closely with the Communications Director to implement initiatives, manage team members, and ensure consistent messaging across all channels.
You will lead day-to-day communications efforts while supporting content development, public relations, and internal alignment across departments.
Responsibilities
- Support the development and execution of communications strategies and campaigns
- Manage and oversee Communications Coordinators, Associates, and Assistants
- Ensure consistency in messaging, tone, and brand voice across all platforms
- Collaborate with Marketing, PR, and Multimedia teams on campaigns and initiatives
- Review and edit content including emails, newsletters, blogs, and press materials
- Monitor communication performance and suggest improvements
- Assist in developing internal communication processes and workflows
- Support volunteer engagement and team coordination within the department
- Ensure all communications align with organizational goals and compliance standards
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field
- 3–5+ years of experience in communications, PR, or related field
- Previous experience managing or leading a team preferred
- Strong writing, editing, and strategic communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
- Strong organizational and leadership skills
- Familiarity with digital communication tools and platforms
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment

- Fully remote position

- Minimum 3–6 month commitment required
- Must have access to a computer and reliable internet
- Availability for periodic virtual meetings
