    Co-Director, Technical Operations, Volunteer

    About the Pet Cancer Foundation

The Pet Cancer Foundation’s vision is to increase the life expectancy and improve the quality of life of pets diagnosed with cancer. Each year, an estimated 12 million dogs and cats are diagnosed with cancer, six times the number of humans affected annually in North America. We’re working to change that.

As our volunteer organization continues to grow across North America, reliable technology systems and strong technical support are essential to enabling our distributed teams. We are seeking an experienced Director of Technical Operations to lead this critical function and help prepare our technology foundation for future growth.

    About the Position

The volunteer Co-Director of Technical Operations provides senior leadership for PCF’s technology systems, support, and operations. You will oversee the day-to-day management and continuous improvement of our core platforms and software, ensure reliable service delivery, and guide the development of standards, documentation, and support practices. Working closely with senior leadership and department heads, you will help shape a scalable technology environment that supports the organization’s mission while maintaining security, usability, and operational excellence.

Please leave a note with your application acknowledging your awareness of the volunteer nature of this position. We will only contact and proceed with candidates who confirm their understanding.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Lead the overall direction, standards, and performance of PCF’s technical operations and support functions.
    • Oversee the administration, security, and optimization of core systems and software.
    • Ensure consistent, high-quality technical support for volunteers and teams across the organization.
    • Develop and maintain clear technical documentation, processes, and user guidance.
    • Establish and improve service standards, response practices, and continuous improvement efforts.
    • Collaborate with senior leadership and department heads to understand technology needs and prioritize solutions.
    • Guide the evaluation and introduction of new tools and systems as the organization scales.
    • Build, coach, and support a technical team (including Systems Administrators and related roles) to deliver reliable service.
    • Monitor system performance, security posture, and operational health, escalating risks as needed.
    • Serve as a trusted technical advisor to leadership on operational readiness and future technology planning.

    About You

You’re a seasoned technical operations leader who enjoys building reliable systems and supporting people in a mission-driven environment. You combine strong technical judgment with clear communication and a practical, service-oriented approach. You bring:

    • 5+ years of experience leading technical operations, IT support, or systems administration teams (nonprofit, distributed, or cloud-focused environments preferred).
    • Proven experience managing Google Workspace (or similar cloud productivity platforms) and related user support.
    • Strong understanding of system administration, security best practices, and operational reliability.
    • Experience developing documentation, processes, and support standards.
    • Ability to lead and coach technical team members in a remote environment.
    • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills across technical and non-technical audiences.
    • Strategic yet practical mindset with the ability to balance current operational needs and future growth.
    • Genuine interest in PCF’s mission and a desire to strengthen the technology foundation that supports our work.

    What we provide you with

Volunteering as Co-Director of Technical Operations gives you the opportunity to lead a critical function during a period of organizational growth. You will shape technology operations that enable hundreds of volunteers, work closely with senior leadership, build scalable processes, and make a tangible contribution to a nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of pets and their families.
