The Assistant Editor supports the Editor-in-Chief to ensure all published content aligns with IELLP’s mission to make policy, criminal justice, and immigration issues accessible to Inland Empire residents. This position will oversee a small team of researchers and writers and uphold editing standards, and maintain the organization’s credibility.
Here are the position details:
Title: Assistant Editor
Reports to: Editor-in-Chief
Time Commitment: 5-10 hours per week
Position Type: Volunteer
Responsibilities:
- Lead the researchers and writers to ensure effective collaboration through every step of the research and writing process.
- Provide mentorship and constructive feedback to the research and writing team.
- Review and edit first, second, and final drafts of articles.
- Ensure all deadlines are met by yourself and the research and writing team.
- Facilitate "check-in" meetings to ensure the writing team is on track.
- Ensure every article aligns with the broader mission of IELLP.
- Ensure stories reflect the lived experiences of the people of the Inland Empire.
- Fact-check all sources or facts cited in articles
- Edit and approve articles, op-eds, and reports for clarity, accuracy, and tone.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Political Science, or a related field.
- Strong command of grammar, syntax, and style.
- Experience in community-based or advocacy journalism.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice and public education.
