Extraordinary People Needed to Sit Vigil with Hospice Patients (South Shore)

Vigil Volunteer Opportunity

At Autumn Hospice, we believe that no one should face the end of life alone. We are seeking compassionate volunteers to provide presence and comfort to individuals in their final moments. Sitting vigil is a deeply human act—offering quiet companionship during one of life’s most intimate transitions.

What Vigil Volunteers Do

Vigil volunteers offer a calming presence to patients nearing death. This may include dimming lights, playing soft music, reading aloud, or simply holding a hand in silence. Volunteers serve when family members are unavailable or need respite, and sometimes for patients without loved ones. Your presence can bring peace and dignity to someone in their final hours.

Requirements

To serve as a vigil volunteer, you must:

• • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be comfortable with the realities of death and dying
  • Demonstrate strong communication and active listening skills
  • Stay composed in emotional or stressful situations
  • Offer nonjudgmental support, allowing patients to express themselves freely
  • Be flexible and available on short notice
  • Have a valid driver’s license, insurance, and 24/7 access to a vehicle
  • Prior hospice experience is helpful but not required

Schedule: This is an on-call/as-needed volunteer position.
