Content Writer (Social Media & Digital Platforms) (Volunteer)

PromiseVoice | Social Media, Digital Storytelling & Audience Engagement

    Organization: Mentor A Promise (MAP)

Division: PromiseVoice (in collaboration with PromiseLink / PromisePath)

Location: Remote (with potential NYC-based collaboration)

    Type: Volunteer

    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability. Through mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning (SEL), creative expression, and community, MAP creates consistent spaces where young people can grow, belong, and thrive.

Our digital ecosystem—including PromisePath (student learning) and PromiseLink (mentor engagement)—extends this work beyond physical spaces. Across platforms, we use storytelling to build connection, visibility, and trust.

About PromiseVoice | Communications, Social Media & Public Narrative

PromiseVoice is MAP’s communications division responsible for how the organization speaks to the world—across social media, digital platforms, campaigns, and storytelling.

The division ensures that content is not only written well—but seen, shared, and felt.

    Role Overview

We are seeking a Content Writer with a strong focus on social media and digital storytelling to create content that connects, engages, and grows MAP’s audience across platforms.

This role goes beyond writing—it requires understanding how content performs in real environments: Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, blogs, newsletters, and in-app experiences.

You will help shape how MAP’s voice shows up daily—through posts, captions, stories, campaigns, and digital narratives.

This is a writing + strategy + engagement role.

    Key Responsibilities

    Social Media Content Creation

    • Write compelling captions, posts, and short-form content for platforms (Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, etc.)
    • Adapt messaging for each platform’s tone, audience, and format
    • Develop content that is engaging, shareable, and aligned with MAP’s mission

    Digital Storytelling & Narrative Development

    • Translate MAP’s work into clear, human-centered stories
    • Highlight student experiences, mentorship, and community impact
    • Ensure all storytelling reflects dignity, care, and authenticity

    Content Strategy & Engagement

    • Contribute to content calendars and campaign planning
    • Write content that drives interaction, visibility, and growth
    • Support audience engagement through thoughtful, timely responses

    Website & App Content Support

    • Write and refine content for MAP’s website and digital platforms (PromisePath / PromiseLink)
    • Ensure consistency across all digital touchpoints
    • Support UX-aligned content that improves clarity and usability

    SEO & Performance Optimization

    • Apply SEO best practices for web and blog content
    • Use engagement data (views, clicks, shares) to refine writing
    • Continuously improve content based on performance insights

    Cross-Team Collaboration

    • Work with designers, developers, and content teams
    • Align messaging with campaigns, programs, and partnerships
    • Support integrated storytelling across all platforms

    Consistency & Communication

    • Maintain consistent tone, voice, and messaging across platforms
    • Check and respond to communications in a timely, professional manner
    • Meet deadlines and manage multiple content streams

    Qualifications

    Required

    • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills
    • Experience creating content for social media platforms
    • Understanding of platform-specific writing styles (short-form, caption-based, etc.)
    • Ability to write content that is clear, engaging, and audience-focused
    • Strong organizational and time management skills
    • Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values

    Preferred

    • Experience with SEO, analytics, or performance-based writing
    • Experience writing for nonprofit, education, or social impact organizations
    • Familiarity with content tools and platforms (Canva, scheduling tools, etc.)
    • Understanding of digital engagement trends and audience behavior

    Commitment

    • Volunteer role
    • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment required
    • Remote-first with optional NYC collaboration

    What You’ll Gain

    • Hands-on experience in social media strategy and digital storytelling
    • Opportunity to shape the public voice of a growing nonprofit
    • Collaboration with creative, tech, and program teams
    • Portfolio development across multiple platforms
    • Professional references and letters of recommendation
    • A meaningful role amplifying stories that matter

    How to Apply

Interested candidates must apply directly through Idealist and submit:

    • Resume (required)
    • Writing samples or portfolio (required)
    • Brief statement of interest

    Write for where people are.

Not just on pages—but in feeds, in moments, in motion.

This role holds the pieces together.

From research to outreach to execution—help ensure every story is fully built before it’s told.
