Adult volunteers who are very committed to positive dog-training and skilled with a wide range of large and very energetic dogs, especially pit bull terriers/mixes, German Shepherds, and Huskies are needed on Thursdays, 9- 11am.
This is an exhilarating and deeply fulfilling experience, albeit arduous, using your dog-savvy skills to help some of the most vulnearable dogs in King County.
Once-a-week shifts * two hours (some weeks off okay for vacations and so forth). Initial commitment: 50 hours out of training.
Keys to success with RASKC dogs: kindness, positive reinforcement, and the ability to skillfully get dogs in/out of the kennel area quickly so they can enjoy fresh air outside!
Typically, you would share a shift with two or three other Dog Walkers.
Volunteers harness the dogs, exit the kennel area, then spend some nice time outside, usually on a walk. Fun times can also be had in the doggie play yards.
Dog walkers are color-coded according to the type of dog they are eligible to walk.
. Green: Most Dog Walkers start as color "green" are eligible to work with our friendliest dogs.
. Blue: Dog Walkers who are assessed as "blue" are eligible to take out the shy dogs and the friendly dogs.
. Red: Dog Walkers who are identified as "red" are eligible to walk any of the adoptable dogs, including the ones that need skillful handling.
RASKC needs "red" Dog Walkers.
