About Us:
The Community Engagement Center (CEC) is an early-stage civic-tech nonprofit working to gamify civic engagement. Our mission is to make democracy accessible, rewarding, and fun through an app and community hub.
The Role:
We’re looking for a UX/UI Designer (volunteer) to join our development team. Your work will shape the look, feel, and user experience of our app so our developers can focus on coding. You’ll help translate our vision into clean, intuitive, and engaging designs using Figma.
This is a volunteer, unpaid role — but an incredible portfolio opportunity. You’ll be able to say: “I designed the interface for a nonprofit civic-tech app from the ground up.” If you’re looking to build real-world experience and have creative freedom while contributing to a good cause, this role is for you.
What You’ll Do:
- Create wireframes, mockups, and prototypes in Figma.
- Collaborate with developers to hand off design specs and ensure smooth implementation.
- Work closely with the founder to translate community engagement ideas into user-friendly interfaces.
- Help establish a consistent design system (colors, fonts, components).
- Iterate based on feedback from the dev team and future users.
What Success Looks Like:
- A polished, intuitive app design that developers can easily build from.
- Clear design guidelines that make the product feel cohesive.
- Strong portfolio pieces showcasing real-world impact.
Who We’re Looking For:
- Students, aspiring designers, or early-career UX/UI professionals eager to grow their portfolios.
- People with experience in Figma (a must).
- Creatives who care about community, civic engagement, and design that empowers people.
- Team players who enjoy collaboration with developers.
Details:
- Remote, flexible hours.
- Weekly or biweekly check-ins with the team.
- Workload can be tailored to your schedule.
