Mission

the Service Board (tSB) centers youth leadership in bridging opportunity and wellbeing gaps through lifelong mentorship, outdoor adventure and social justice. tSB provides mentorship, outdoor adventure, environmental and social justice education, and public service opportunities for up to 50 high-school-aged BIPOC youth and young adults from historically marginalized communities (low-income, immigrant, refugee, LGBTQIA+, and unhoused) in Washington State.

General Board Member Position Summary

Board members support the work of tSB and provide mission-based leadership and strategic guidance. While day-to-day operations are led by tSB’s staff, the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. All Board Members are expected to:

• Regularly attend and actively participate in all board meetings, team-building activities, and fundraising events held monthly Jan - Nov
• Serve on, and actively participate, in at least one (1) committee and offer to take on special assignments to support strategic goals (ex. Finance, fundraising, risk management, etc.)
• Stay informed of tSB’s mission, services, policies, and programs, and developments in the organization's field, in order to support policy and procedure development that furthers the mission
• Assist the Board Chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members
• Contribute to an annual performance evaluation of the Executive Director
• Represent tSB to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization
• Solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, corporations and individuals for annual contributions that are commensurate with tSB’s financial goals
• Support the organization with an annual personal financial contribution and through informing others of the organization’s work

tSB's Board of Directors is a working board. In addition to the expectations of a sitting board member listed above, all members leverage individual skillsets to support the work of tSB through committees (12 month commitment). We currently have the following skill-based positions open:

• BoD, Board Development Committee, Member Recruitment & Training
• BoD, Strategic Planning Committee, Impact Data Strategy
• BoD, Strategic Planning Committee, Special Projects
• BoD Fundraising Committee, Major Donor Engagement
• BoD, Fundraising Committee, Marketing Strategy
• BoD, Fundraising Committee, Public Sector & Corporate Outreach

Time commitment

tSB’s Board Members will serve an average of 4 - 8 hours per month, 11 months per year (no Dec meetings), over a total four-year term.

Qualifications

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about tSB’s mission and who has a track record of board leadership. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. Their accomplishments will encourage them to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

• Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector
• A commitment to and understanding of tSB’s beneficiaries, preferably based on experience
• Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals
• Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of tSB’s beneficiaries

Service on tSB’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties.
