About Mentor A Promise
Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning (SEL), and creative expression. Our mentorship model centers safety, stability, and trauma-informed care so that every young person can build trusting relationships and thrive.
About the Role
We are seeking a Match Support Specialist / Social Worker to help ensure strong, healthy, and supportive mentor–mentee relationships. This role provides guidance, resources, and check-ins to mentors, students, and families to ensure matches are safe, effective, and aligned with MAP’s trauma-informed and youth-centered approach.
This role plays a critical part in supporting mentor retention, student wellbeing, and program quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide ongoing support to mentor–mentee matches throughout the program year
- Conduct periodic check-ins with mentors, students, and families
- Offer guidance on communication, boundaries, and relationship-building
- Support mentors in navigating challenges and identifying appropriate resources
- Escalate concerns to program leadership when additional support is needed
- Help document match progress and maintain organized records
- Contribute to development of resources for mentors and families
- Collaborate with mentor training, SEL, and program teams
- Maintain timely, professional responsiveness via email and chat in Google Workspace
Qualifications
- Background in social work, counseling, psychology, education, or youth development
- Strong communication, empathy, and active listening skills
- Comfort supporting volunteers and families in a collaborative environment
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
- Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values
Preferred Skills
- Experience supporting mentorship programs or youth services
- Familiarity with trauma-informed practices
- Experience working with families experiencing housing instability
- Experience with case management or supportive services
Commitment
- Volunteer role
- Approximately 5–10 hours per week
- Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
- Fully remote with optional NYC-based collaboration
