About the Opportunity

Looking for a meaningful (and actually fun) way to spend your summer? Join Jumpstart for Young Children and help preschoolers build the skills they need to succeed in kindergarten and beyond!

As a Jumpstart volunteer, you’ll step into a preschool classroom and bring stories to life—through reading, play, creativity, and conversation. It’s hands-on, high-impact, and incredibly rewarding.

The early years are everything. By spending just a few hours each week with us, you’ll help young children in your community grow their confidence, language skills, and love of learning.

🎨 What You’ll Do

• Read engaging, story-based books with preschoolers
• Lead fun, hands-on activities (think games, art, and imaginative play!)
• Build meaningful connections through conversation and encouragement
• Be a positive, consistent presence in a child’s learning journey

No experience needed—we’ll train you and provide everything you need (including your Jumpstart

t-shirt 👕).

⏰ Commitment

• 6–8 week summer program
• About 4 hours per week
• Sessions take place 2–3 times per week (varies by location)

✅ Who Can Apply

• Must be at least 16 years old
• High school students, college students, and community members
• Anyone excited to work with children ages 3–5
• Must be reliable and able to commit to the full program duration

⚕️ Health & Site Requirements

To ensure the safety of children and classrooms, partner sites require:

• TB test clearance
• Proof of MMR vaccination
• Flu shot (as required by site)

Our team will guide you through this process and answer any questions along the way.

📍 Location

Multiple preschool sites across the Bay Area, including:

• San Francisco (including neighborhoods like Mission District, Bayview, and Visitacion Valley)
• Oakland (including East Oakland and Central Oakland communities)

You’ll be able to indicate your preferred location and schedule when you apply.
