If you enjoy UX research and want to help underserved children around the world gain access to education, keep reading!

Oppia is looking for volunteers to join our learner feedback team who are interested in helping with one or more of the following:

• Carrying out UX studies with learners based on existing research plans, and writing reports for the learner feedback team
• Working with the UX design and product teams to create UX research plans
• Creating "consolidated reports" that summarize the results of multiple UX research reports into a single set of actionable and prioritized follow-up tasks for the broader Oppia team

Note: All applicants must be able to recruit and regularly communicate with at least 2 learners in the 6-14-year-old age group. We accept applicants from all over the world, but prefer applicants who have direct contact with learners in our focus countries/regions (namely Brazil, sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East, Latin America, and India).

The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our free-to-use platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve.

Where You Fit In

Millions of children are not receiving the education they deserve. Of the 61 million children worldwide who cannot attend primary school, 17 million will never step foot into a school if trends continue. Students around the world face difficulties accessing quality education due to conflict, discrimination, and lack of teacher training - and, in the wake of COVID-19, millions more children have also seen interruptions in their daily lives, stability, and education, which makes it even more difficult for them to get the education they need to succeed.

The Oppia team has developed a web platform and Android app that are designed to address these issues head-on, as well as a series of novel and engaging story-based mathematics lessons that have proved highly engaging and effective with students from underserved communities. However, we want to ensure that our platform and lessons are meeting learners where they are, so that we can fix any gaps and ensure that they are as accessible as possible. We also want to understand the barriers that make it difficult for local communities to adopt Oppia, so that we can help address them.

As a member of the learner feedback team, you will represent the voice of the learner and keep the team honest by identifying any gaps in Oppia’s offerings that prevent learners from learning effectively. You will also gain hands-on experience working with and hearing from members of your own community, as well as practical research and experimentation skills. Additionally, you will be able to influence Oppia’s direction with concrete suggestions and feedback that the team can act upon as a direct result of your work.

What Our Learner Feedback Team Contributes

• Conduct research with learners to help identify and address any gaps in the learning experience that Oppia provides
• Create research plans to validate new functionality proposed by designers
• Summarize research reports into actionable items that can be acted on directly, or by other Oppia teams
