This program offers a profound look at the intersection of environmental health and community medicine. You will work alongside local health practitioners to support an underserved population of diverse cultural backgrounds, including Austro-German descendants and indigenous communities.
Your Impact: As a Medical Intern, you will play a crucial role in improving health outcomes in the Pachitea River basin. Your work will include:
- Primary Care Support: Assisting in local health posts with patient triage, basic wound care, and maternal-child health checks.
- Public Health Campaigns: Developing and delivering workshops on sanitation, nutrition, and parasite prevention in rural schools.
- Tropical Medicine: Learning to identify and treat common regional ailments, including leishmaniasis, dengue, and gastrointestinal infections.
- Home Visits: Traveling to remote sectors of the community to provide basic health screenings for elderly or isolated residents.
Responsibilities
- Assist local medical staff during consultation hours (triage, vitals, and history taking).
- Help organize and manage medical supplies and community health records.
- Design and implement at least one "Health Education" project (e.g., clean water workshops or dental hygiene for kids).
- Collaborate on emergency response protocols within the village when necessary.
Qualifications
- Education: Currently enrolled in or graduated from a Medical, Nursing, Public Health, or Physician Assistant program.
- Language: Intermediate Spanish (B1/B2) is required for this position to ensure effective communication with patients and local staff. We provide translator devices in case interns do not speak intermediate Spanish.
- Soft Skills: High level of empathy, cultural humility, and the ability to remain calm in high-pressure or resource-limited environments.
