    About Mentor A Promise

    Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, literacy, education, social-emotional learning (SEL), and creative expression. The arts play a vital role in helping young people process emotions, build confidence, and develop a sense of belonging.

    PromiseStage provides theater and performing arts experiences that help youth explore identity, creativity, confidence, and communication. Theater offers a powerful pathway for self-expression, teamwork, emotional growth, and public speaking.

    Role Overview

    We are seeking a Theater Teacher & Mentor to lead engaging theater-based learning experiences for students. This role blends arts education and mentorship, helping young people develop creativity, confidence, collaboration skills, and emotional expression in a safe and supportive environment.

    The Theater Teacher & Mentor will design and facilitate sessions that introduce acting, storytelling, improvisation, and performance skills while fostering trust, joy, and belonging.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Plan and facilitate theater and drama sessions for youth
    • Introduce acting, storytelling, improvisation, and performance techniques
    • Support students in building confidence, communication, and teamwork skills
    • Create a welcoming, inclusive, and trauma-informed learning environment
    • Collaborate with program staff to align sessions with SEL goals
    • Adapt activities to be age-appropriate and accessible
    • Support potential performances, showcases, or creative projects
    • Maintain timely, professional responsiveness via email and chat in Google Workspace

    Qualifications

    • Experience in theater, drama, performing arts, or arts education
    • Comfort working with children and youth
    • Strong communication and facilitation skills
    • Ability to create inclusive and encouraging learning spaces
    • Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values

    Preferred Skills

    • Experience teaching or mentoring youth
    • Background in theater education, acting, directing, or performance
    • Familiarity with trauma-informed or SEL-informed teaching approaches
    • Experience working in nonprofit or community settings

    Commitment

    • Volunteer role
    • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Remote and/or NYC-based collaboration as needed
