Make a Difference — Become a Volunteer English Tutor

Learning a new language changes lives. As a volunteer tutor with Literacy Volunteers of Southern Connecticut (LVSCT), you can be the reason an adult learner lands their first job, helps their child with homework, or finally feels at home in their community.

We're looking for compassionate people who are ready to give just 2–3 hours a week. If you can read, write, and speak English — and you're 18 or older — you have everything you need to get started. LVSCT provides all training and materials at no cost to you.

What you'll be doing: LVSCT pairs volunteer tutors one-on-one with adult learners who want to speak English with confidence, or strengthen their reading, writing, comprehension, pronunciation, and conversational skills. It's personal, flexible, and deeply rewarding work.

The impact goes further than you might think. As learners grow more comfortable with English, doors begin to open — to employment and job training, professional certifications, involvement in their children's education, and a fuller sense of belonging in their community.

Tutoring is flexible, too. Sessions can take place in person at locations throughout the greater Milford/Stratford area, or virtually — whatever works best for you and your learner.
