We are the American Red Cross. Sleeves up. Hearts open. All in.
Home fires and other disasters can occur any time, any place. As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you’ll provide emotional support, financial assistance, and information to help families begin the process of recovery. After your initial training, your shifts will include responding to emergencies within 2 hours, night or day, rain or shine, either on the scene or coordinating remotely to provide immediate compassion and care. With experience and further training you can take on leadership and response coordination roles to have a wider impact. At the same time, you’ll be developing skills that you may choose to apply to larger-scale disaster response efforts with the Red Cross.
Many disaster action team volunteers share these life experiences and skills:
- Team-oriented
- Availability and flexibility for at least 4-6 hours per week
- Bilingual (preferred, but not required)
- Comfortable with ambiguity
- Empathetic and compassionate
- Can remain calm and patient during stressful situations
Time commitment: Monthly self-selected on-call shifts.

Thank you for expressing an interest in joining the American Red Cross!
You are just 10 minutes and 5 easy steps away from embarking on a life enriching experience. The following
steps will help guide adults (18+) through creating a volunteer application in our volunteer management system
called Volunteer Connection.
1 – FIND A VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
To learn about the most urgent volunteer needs, visit
To explore all opportunities, navigate to redcross.org/volunteer
Click on "FIND MY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY"
Enter your zip code and search by keyword, take a short quiz to see
your best fit or browse all
Click “Apply Now” on desired position
2 - CREATE A RED CROSS ID
Complete the required fields on the right side of the screen and click “Create My Red Cross ID”.
Fill in your contact information and click "Continue to Verify Contact Info" at the bottom of the
page.
Choose how you would like to receive your confirmation code: via text or email and click "Send Me the
Code!". Enter this code on the next screen and click “Submit & Agree to Our Policies”.
Fill out optional demographic information and click “Continue to Terms & conditions”.
3 - POLICY AGREEMENT
Click on each of the three links to the documents to read and agree to Red Cross Policies. Be sure to
click on the text to make the policy pop up in a separate window.
After you complete this step, click the red “Continue to Photo ID Upload” button.
4 - BACKGROUND CHECK
Upload a picture of your valid ID by clicking on the link to Upload and select the file from your device.
Click the red “Continue to Background Check” button.
Click to certify your legal name and address have been entered.
Click on each policy to read and agree to the required consent form. Click the red “Authorize
Background Check” button, enter required information and click "Finish". You will be brought to the
home screen.
5 - FINAL TOUCHES
Record your vaccination status. Click to open the form and select “YES, I AM FULLY VACCINATED”, along
with uploading a photo of your vaccine card, or by clicking “NO”.

Launch the online orientation visit to learn more about the American Red Cross.
Look for an invitation via email/phone call from a knowledgeable Red Cross representative to connect
about your interest and match you with the right volunteer role.
The American Red Cross is dedicated to the safety of our employees, volunteers and those we serve.
Therefore, all employees and volunteers (18+) undergo an ID verification and Background Checks process. In addition,
volunteers applying for in-person positions must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
