United Way’s Free Tax Preparation Campaign needs your help!

Looking to make an impact in your community in a way that lets you exercise your professional and life experience in service to others?

Every year, thousands of individuals and families across King County come to United Way tax preparation sites to have their taxes prepared for free, to learn more about their tax situation, and to get help resolving questions or concerns regarding their returns. Tax time can be a confusing and stressful time for many, but by working one-on-one with community members, free tax volunteers are able to help tackle that stress and, often, put money in the form of tax credits and refunds back into people's pockets.

Since its inception in 2003, the Free Tax Prep Campaign has served more than 150,000 clients and distributed more than $200 million in refunds at absolutely no cost. This year, we expect to operate 20 tax sites across King County and bring additional millions in tax credits and into the community.

For just four hours a week, you could make a big impact in the lives of your friends and neighbors! We have opportunities on weekdays, weekends, mornings, afternoons, and evenings.

We are recruiting for the following roles, no tax experience required (we train you!):

Volunteer Tax Preparer - Sit down with folks and prepare their taxes, answer basic questions, and ensure that tax clients receive all the tax credits they are entitled to.

Intake Tax Volunteer - Don’t want to prepare taxes but want to be involved? No problem! The intake role is fun and easy-- you welcome clients and help them get their documents ready, then place them with a tax preparer. This role is just as vital to a tax site as the tax preparation itself!

Remote Intake - Our remote tax preparation platform is growing every year. In 2026 we expect to help more folks outside King County than ever before, as we continue to expand our offerings to more remote areas in Washington State, which may not otherwise have access to free tax resources. While we ask that remote tax preparers have tax experience, you do not need tax experience to help us with intake. Would you be able to assist us-- from the comfort of your home?
