Position Overview:An Advisory Board Member serves as a trusted expert who provides strategic guidance, industry insights, and specialized expertise to the executive leadership of an organization. While not involved in day-to-day operations or formal governance, advisory board members play a crucial role in helping the organization navigate challenges, identify opportunities, and achieve its mission and goals.
Key Responsibilities:Strategic Guidance:
Advise on long-term strategic planning, business development, partnerships, and growth opportunities.
Provide objective feedback and recommendations on key initiatives, programs, or organizational changes.
Industry Expertise:
Share insights on industry trends, market dynamics, and best practices.
Help the organization remain competitive and adaptive to evolving conditions.
Networking and Advocacy:
Leverage personal and professional networks to support the organization’s outreach, fundraising, or partnership efforts.
Act as an ambassador and advocate for the organization in relevant circles.
Mentorship and Support:
Offer mentorship to executive leadership and senior staff.
Assist with talent acquisition, leadership development, or succession planning if requested.
Advisory Board Participation:
Attend and actively participate in scheduled advisory board meetings (typically quarterly).
Review materials in advance and come prepared to engage in meaningful discussions.
Serve on subcommittees or task forces as needed.
Demonstrated success in a senior leadership, entrepreneurial, or subject-matter expert role.
Relevant experience in the organization’s industry or mission area.
Strong strategic thinking, analytical, and communication skills.
High level of professional integrity and discretion.
Willingness to dedicate time and energy to the organization’s success.
Experience with governance or board service (preferred but not required).
Varies by organization, but typically:
Meetings: 2-4 meetings per year (virtual or in-person).
Additional Commitments: Estimated 2-5 hours per month for reading materials, communication, or occasional special projects.
This role is unpaid, especially in nonprofits or early-stage ventures.
In corporate settings, honoraria, stipends, equity, or other compensation may be offered.
