Volunteers Needed: Help End Youth Homelessness in South & Central Florida
Organization focus: Youth Homelessness Prevention & Housing, South & Central Florida Opportunity type: Host Families | Community Volunteers | Advocates Location: South Florida & Central Florida (Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Orange, Osceola, Seminole counties) Commitment: Flexible — from a single day to an ongoing relationship.
About the Crisis
Right now, thousands of young people across South and Central Florida have nowhere safe to sleep tonight. Despite a shortage of nearly 98,000 affordable housing units in our region, virtually every attempt to open a shelter or affordable housing has been met with community resistance.
We believe the solution isn't one big building — it's many compassionate people opening their doors, their time, and their hearts throughout our neighborhoods.
That's where you come in.
Who We're Looking For
Host Families
We are actively seeking screened, trained families and individuals willing to open a spare room to a young person (ages 16–24) who is experiencing homelessness. This is not a foster care placement — it is a supported, time-limited arrangement with a professional nonprofit partner guiding you every step of the way.
What hosting looks like:
- Providing a safe room, meals, and a stable home environment
- Committing to a defined period (typically 30–90 days, renewable)
- Participating in brief training and regular check-ins with a case manager
- Offering mentorship, connection, and the experience of a functioning household
You don't need to be a perfect family — you just need to be a willing one.
Community Volunteers
If hosting isn't right for you, there are many other ways to make a real difference:
- Mentors — Meet weekly with a young person to offer guidance, life skills, and connection
- Drivers — Transport youth to job interviews, appointments, and services
- Tutors & coaches — Help with GED prep, job applications, resume writing, and interview skills
- Donated goods coordinators — Collect and distribute clothing, hygiene kits, and household items
- Event and outreach volunteers — Help raise awareness and build community support at local events
- Advocates — Attend public meetings, speak to neighbors, and help shift the conversation around affordable housing in your community
Faith Community Liaisons
If you are part of a church, mosque, synagogue, or other faith community and want to help your congregation get involved — as a host site, volunteer source, or community partner — we would love to connect with you.
Why This Matters
Youth homelessness in Florida is not just a housing problem. It is a foster care system problem, a mental health crisis, a family breakdown, and an affordability emergency — all at once. Young people experiencing homelessness face dramatically higher risks of exploitation, health crises, and long-term poverty.
Small, community-embedded solutions — like host homes and neighborhood volunteers — are proven to work. They are also far more politically viable than large shelters, which face fierce resistance in nearly every neighborhood where they are proposed.
You, your family, and your community are the solution.
What We Provide to Volunteers and Host Families

All volunteers and host families undergo background screening. Youth placements are managed in partnership with licensed social service organizations. HOW TO GET INVOLVED — VOLUNTEER & HOST FAMILY INSTRUCTIONS
Combating Youth Homelessness in South & Central Florida
Thank you for your interest in helping end youth homelessness in our region. Whether you are considering opening your home as a host family or volunteering your time and skills, your involvement makes a real difference. Please follow the steps below to get started.
YOUR PATH TO MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Step 1 — Send us an email Reach out to us via idealist to express your interest. Tell us a little about yourself — whether you are interested in hosting a youth in your home, volunteering your time, or both. No commitment is required at this stage.

- Your name and the city or county you live in
- Whether you are interested in hosting, volunteering, or both
- Any questions you have — no question is too small
Step 2 — We will be in touch within 48 hours Once we receive your email, a member of our team will respond within 48 hours to answer your questions, learn more about you, and help identify the best way for you to get involved based on your situation, schedule, and household.
Step 3 — Attend a free orientation session All volunteers and host families are invited to attend a brief orientation session — approximately 60 minutes — where you will learn about the youth we serve, how our program works, and what to expect. Sessions are available virtually and in person.
Step 4 — Complete a background check For the safety and wellbeing of the youth in our care, all volunteers and host families are required to complete a background check before being placed. This process is straightforward, fully guided by our team, and typically completed within a few days.
Host families will also complete a brief home assessment to ensure a safe and welcoming environment.
Step 5 — Complete your volunteer training Before any placement or volunteer assignment, you will receive focused training covering youth trauma awareness, healthy communication, maintaining boundaries, and the support resources available to you. Training takes 2–4 hours and can be completed at your own pace.
Step 6 — Get matched and start making a difference Once you are cleared and trained, you will be thoughtfully matched with a youth or assigned to a volunteer role that fits your strengths, availability, and household. A dedicated case manager will support you throughout — you are never alone in this.
