International Volunteer Opportunities with Pastoralists Resilience Development Initiative (PAREDI)
Introduction
PAREDI, a nonprofit organization based in Samburu County, Kenya, is dedicated to building resilience in pastoralist communities through innovative programs in sustainable rangeland management, livelihoods, education, climate adaptation, and research. We invite passionate international volunteers to join us in driving impactful change in Samburu, Isiolo, and Marsabit Counties.
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers can contribute across PAREDI’s five thematic areas, aligning with their skills and interests to support community-driven development. Opportunities include:
Sustainable Rangeland and Natural Resources Management
- Activities: Supporting rangeland restoration initiatives, promoting sustainable practices, and engaging in biodiversity monitoring.
- Ideal Skills: Environmental science, GIS, agroecology, or community facilitation.
Sustainable Livelihoods and Market Systems Development
- Activities: Training on alternative livelihoods, improving value chains, and supporting blacksmith and artisanal enterprises.
- Ideal Skills: Business development, entrepreneurship, and community training.
Pastoralist Education and Health for Resilience Building
- Activities: Assisting with health and education campaigns, school capacity-building, and mental health support.
- Ideal Skills: Education, public health, and counseling.
Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation
- Activities: Promoting renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, and disaster risk management strategies.
- Ideal Skills: Climate science, environmental policy, and sustainable technologies.
Research, Knowledge Management, and Institutional Strengthening
- Activities: Participating in participatory research, developing materials, and strengthening institutional systems.
- Ideal Skills: Research, writing, and project management.
Volunteer Benefits

Engagement Period
Volunteer opportunities range from 1 to 8 weeks, offering flexibility to accommodate varying schedules.
Requirements
- Respect for local cultures and adaptability to rural settings.
- Self-funded participation, covering travel, living expenses and conservation fees to conservancies and wildlife parks.
