Volunteer Abroad: Child Labor and Trafficking Project

In Ghana, over 1.3 million children are trapped in child labor—many under harsh, exploitative, and dangerous conditions. Nowhere is this crisis more visible than in fishing communities, where children are often forced to work long hours under life-threatening conditions.

The leading cause of child labor and trafficking is poverty. When families face extreme financial hardship, they may—out of desperation—sell or send their children into labor, unaware of the full consequences. Many of these children are handed over to fishermen and taken to remote villages where they receive little to no compensation and endure physically demanding labor that often leads to serious injury—or even death.

At Future Stars, we are committed to breaking this cycle.

Our Child Labor Eradication Program is rooted in the fishing communities of Fetteh, Nyanyano, and Senya Beraku—regions where child labor and trafficking are tragically common.

We work closely with local schools, families, and community leaders to educate, prevent, and ultimately eliminate child exploitation at its root.

We believe that education is the key to prevention. Many families do not fully understand what happens to children once they leave home. By providing honest, community-sensitive education, we empower both parents and children to make informed decisions—and choose a better path.

Our volunteers play a crucial role in this effort.

As a volunteer, you will:

• Lead educational sessions in local schools, speaking directly with students about the dangers of child trafficking and the importance of staying in school
• Engage with families and community members to raise awareness and offer alternatives to child labor
• Conduct field research on the root causes and long-term impact of child labor, helping us develop data-informed strategies for intervention and prevention
• Support reintegration efforts for at-risk children by promoting access to education, vocational training, and counseling resources

Volunteers do not need prior experience in education or research—just a passion for advocacy and a willingness to learn.
