I Kare NC is seeking a Volunteer Youth Substance Use Prevention Mentor to support justice-involved youth at Rockingham Youth Development Center who have been impacted by substance use. This role focuses on education, prevention, and healthy decision-making, helping young people build coping skills and hope for their future.
Volunteer Job Description
The Volunteer Mentor will help lead small-group discussions and activities that address substance use, risk factors, peer pressure, trauma, and strategies for staying substance-free. Using I Kare NC’s trauma-informed approach and materials, you’ll create a nonjudgmental space where youth can learn, reflect, and practice new skills.
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitate weekly or bi-weekly substance use prevention sessions at Rockingham YDC
- Lead age-appropriate discussions on substance use, consequences, and healthy alternatives
- Teach coping skills, stress management, and decision-making tools
- Model positive behavior, boundaries, and safe communication
- Collaborate with I Kare NC staff and YDC staff to support a safe, trauma-informed environment
- Document attendance and brief notes on youth participation and engagement
Preferred Qualifications:
- Passion for supporting at-risk or justice-involved youth
- Understanding of substance use risks, peer pressure, and basic prevention strategies
- Lived experience as a or have worked in this field prior or current
- Strong listening skills, empathy, and nonjudgmental attitude
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries

Commitment & Requirements:
- Commit to a consistent schedule (about 1–2 hours per week or bi-weekly) for at least 6 months
- Complete required background checks and Rockingham YDC facility clearance
