    Descrição

Stage and Furnish Homes for Families Displaced by the LA Fires (Home Creation)

A Sense of Home’s Disaster Recovery Program helps families displaced by the LA wildfires bring comfort, function, and a sense of home to their new spaces. Working from our El Monte warehouse (near Altadena), volunteers thoughtfully select and stage donated furniture and home goods to furnish living rooms, bedrooms, and dining areas — all personalized to each family’s needs, taste, and layout.

We call these Home Creations and each is a hands-on, creative collaboration leading up to a reveal of the staged rooms to the recipient families. Volunteers then pack and load the items into a truck for each family to bring to their new home.

To date, we’ve completed 480 Home Creations and we need you to help us meet the home needs of the families still on our waitlist. This work is intentional, fulfilling and deeply needed. Join us!

Select a shift on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday

AM Shift: 10:00am-12.30pm (creating 2-3 homes)

PM Shift: 1:00-3:30pm (creating 2-3 homes)

Stay for both shifts (5.5 hours total) and create up to 6 homes for 6 different families.

In a single 2.5-hour shift, volunteers might be:

    • Staging furniture, home items and decor
    • Loading the above into recipients' moving trucks
    • Assembling and cleaning furniture
    • Organizing and restocking inventory
    • Breaking down boxes and helping with general warehouse needs

Additionally, we offer Warehouse Assistance Shifts (Tuesdays & Wednesdays) for those down for more independent but essential work — building and moving furniture, reorganizing inventory and doing light maintenance, cleaning or repairs, all of which helps keep this operation running smoothly.

    AGE LIMITATIONS + PHYSICAL/WAREHOUSE REQUIREMENTS

Ages 12 and up are welcome. Please inquire (volunteering@asenseofhome.org) about anybody younger entering the warehouse as well as groups of people under the age of 18. There are various tasks ranging from minimal physical exertion to heavier lifting of furniture. There is always something for everybody to do!

Volunteers entering the warehouse must be wearing closed toe shoes and are required to have signed our warehouse safety waiver, which is a part of our online registration. We strongly encourage volunteers to wear comfortable, season-appropriate clothing (it can get hot or chilly in the warehouse) that they don’t mind getting a little dusty.
