Volunteer Middle School Literacy Tutor
Help students find their voice - on the page and beyond.
Harlem Commonwealth Council (HCC) is looking for caring volunteer Literacy Tutors to help Harlem middle school students grow as readers, writers, and critical thinkers. This is a powerful opportunity to give back, nurture confidence, and help young people develop skills they will use in every subject and throughout life.
Program Year
Fall 2026 - June 2027
Schedule
Saturdays, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Students
Grades 6-8
Location
Harlem; exact location shared during onboarding
Commitment
Minimum of 8 weeks
How You Will Make an Impact
- Provide one-on-one or small-group literacy support
- Strengthen reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and written expression
- Support reading assignments, writing activities, and skill-building exercises
- Encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and academic confidence
- Be a dependable mentor and positive role model
Who We Are Looking For
- Advanced high school students, college students, educators, professionals, and community members are encouraged to apply
- Strong reading, writing, grammar, and comprehension skills
- Patient, encouraging, dependable, and ready to connect with young people
- Tutoring or youth-development experience is a plus, but not required
