Preventative Search and Rescue Initiative Inc. (PSAR Initiative) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on preventing injuries and deaths in the outdoors and conservation through education, engagement, and community programs. We are assembling a volunteer legal team to provide pro bono guidance on a wide range of matters affecting a growing outdoor safety organization.
We are seeking attorneys who can advise on issues such as:
- Federal and state nonprofit compliance and governance
- Freedom of Information / Freedom of Information Law (FOIA / FOIL) requests to public agencies
- Public-lands and access questions related to trail work and outdoor education
- Drafting or reviewing cease-and-desist or demand letters when PSAR or its volunteers are harassed or falsely restricted from lawful activity on public land
- Risk management and liability for volunteers and field activities
- Contracts, waivers, and partnership agreements
- General counsel and nonprofit advisory support
Who you are
- Licensed attorney or experienced legal professional (any U.S. state)
- Background in nonprofit, environmental, municipal, or public-interest law is helpful but not required
- Comfortable working independently and communicating with non-lawyers
- Willing to donate a few hours per month and join a small, growing team of advisors
Commitment
- Remote volunteer role
- Flexible schedule, estimated 2–6 hours per month depending on projects
- Communication primarily by email or Zoom
