About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a NYC-based nonprofit serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning, and creative expression. Accessibility is not an afterthought at MAP — it is a priority in making sure all children and youth are able to access vital resources.

MAP’s visual identity, educational materials, books, media, and spaces all rely on accessibility through their design.

Role Overview

The Mentor a Disability Justice Blogger will familiarize themselves with the ADA, section 504, the Fair Housing Act, IEPs, school accommodations, and overall disability rights. They will also make themselves aware of issues surrounding housing instability. They will then write one to two blog posts per month touching on the intersectional nature of housing instability and disability justice. They will send all drafts to the team lead (Sarah Weill-Jones), and the lead of the Blogs Team. They will then post their blog post after approval and edits from the Disability Justice Team Lead and the Blog Team Lead. Check-ins on progress with blog posts will take place during weekly meetings with the whole disability justice team.

Key Responsibilities

• Research the intersectional nature of unhoused youth and disability youth issues
• Write one to two blog posts monthly for the Mentor A Promise PromiseRights Blog about current disability rights issues, concerns, and/or wins, highlighting the intersections between disability rights and housing instability
• Tie disability rights issues into the broader mission of Mentor a Promise
• Use Universal Design Principals
• Implement accessible practice through alt text in their posts when images are present

Qualifications

• Strong commitment to accessibility and disability justice
• Strong writing ability and story-telling skills
• Reliability, creativity, and comfort working in a collaborative nonprofit environment
• Alignment with MAP’s mission and commitment to dignity-centered work

Preferred Skills

• Experience advocating for disabled individuals, or lived experience as a disabled person
• Familiarity with ADA, section 504, IEPs, and accommodations
• Familiarity with Universal Design
• Previous work creating blogs and summaries of sensitive topics
• Synthesize complex laws and issues regarding housing instability and disability justice into approachable manner
• Experience working with variety of different teams ie. legal teams, writing teams, training teams, etc.

Commitment

• Volunteer role
• Approximately 5–10 hours per week
• Meeting once a week with Disability Justice and Accessibility Team and once a week with the Blogs Team
• Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
• Fully remote with optional NYC-based collaboration
• 1-2 blog posts per month
