Board of Directors - Building a community-based food museum

    Board Member Opportunity

The Museum of Food and Culture is a Denver-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2019 to inspire curiosity, creativity, and community through food, history, and culture.

We create interactive exhibits, school partnerships, and public programs that use food as a lens to explore identity, belonging, social change, and cultural connection. Since our founding, we have partnered with schools, libraries, museums, and community organizations to engage over 11,000 students, families, and community members through participatory learning experiences.

The Museum is now entering a critical growth moment as we expand school programming, launch field trip experiences, and explore opportunities for our first physical home in Denver.

    Position Overview

The Museum of Food and Culture is seeking passionate, strategic, and community-minded leaders to join our working Board of Directors. This is an opportunity to help guide an innovative cultural organization at an exciting stage of growth as we transition from a successful pop-up and virtual model toward a permanent community-centered museum experience.

Board members serve as thought partners, ambassadors, advocates, and active contributors to the organization’s strategic development and long-term sustainability. We are seeking candidates with experience in:

    • Fundraising and donor development
    • Grant writing
    • Arts and cultural nonprofit leadership
    • Marketing and communications
    • Finance or legal expertise
    • Strategic partnerships and community engagement
    • Real estate, placemaking, or capital project experience

    Board Member Responsibilities

Board members are expected to serve a one year term (with opportunity for renewal) with 10-15 hours of volunteer work per month.

    • Provide strategic leadership by contributing to organizational strategy and long-term planning; advising on opportunities, risks, and sector trends; and reviewing and approving major organizational decisions.
    • Support growth and sustainability by actively helping to identify and secure financial resources; supporting fundraising efforts through introductions, advocacy, and participation; and leveraging professional networks to expand partnerships and visibility.
    • Strengthen governance by reviewing budgets, reports, and organizational policies; ensuring fiduciary and legal responsibilities are met; and maintaining confidentiality and upholding ethical governance standards.
    • Serve as ambassadors by representing and championing the Museum in the community; helping grow awareness of our mission and impact; and attending and supporting key programs and events when possible.
    • Invest personally by making a personally meaningful financial contribution.

    Who Thrives on This Board

This opportunity is ideal for individuals who are:

    • Excited by early-stage organizational growth
    • Passionate about arts, culture, education, or community connection
    • Interested in helping shape a new kind of museum experience
    • Ready to contribute expertise, creativity, and strategic energy

Help build a museum from scratch!

Whether you are a fabulous community-builder, creative storyteller, history nerd, or expert fundraiser, we want to hear from you!

We know the confidence gap and imposter syndrome can get in the way of meeting spectacular candidates, and disproportionately impacts people of color, women, and neurodivergent friends. So, if you are trapped in freeze mode or aren't even sure you should apply BUT this opportunity interests you, shoot us an email with what you have and the method you most prefer to communicate by and we'll reach out :)
