Tywanza Sanders, a man with a philanthropic spirit and a commitment to the achievement of youth in his community and beyond, was the youngest victim of the 2015 Mother Emanuel Church Massacre. To honor his life and continue his legacy, Race 4 Achievement Inc. (R4A) created #Race4Wanza a family friendly community run/walk to provide funds for R4A's TyWanza Sanders Scholarship Fund and other philanthropic outreach programs.
Proceeds from this event have allowed R4A to award $30,000 worth of scholarships since the event's inception to minority high school graduates in the Charleston area. The TyWanza Sanders Scholarship Fund includes The TyWanza Sanders Scholarship at James Island Charter High , West Ashley High, and Burke High School awarding $1,000 scholarships at each school to a minority graduating senior, The Dan Stern Citadel Scholarship awarding a minority Charleston area graduate attending The Citadel with $1,000, Malik Samir Werts Scholarship awarding a minority graduating senior from the Charleston County School of the Arts with $1,000, Kevin White Jr. Fort Dorchester High School (FDHS) Scholarship awarding a minority graduating senior from FDHS with $1,000.
