    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, education, enrichment, creative expression, career development, advocacy, and community-centered opportunity.

As MAP grows, strong marketing helps connect the mission with the people who can participate in it—families, volunteers, supporters, partners, professionals, educators, donors, and community members.

Our goal is not simply greater visibility.

It is meaningful engagement with the right audiences for the right reasons.

    About PromiseVoice

PromiseVoice is MAP's communications and public storytelling division.

The division helps shape how MAP communicates its mission, programs, opportunities, ideas, accomplishments, and impact across digital and public-facing channels.

Marketing within PromiseVoice focuses on audience development, campaigns, engagement, digital growth, and connecting organizational priorities with people who may want to participate in MAP's mission.

    Role Overview

MAP is seeking a strategic, creative, and data-informed Director of Marketing to build and lead the organization's marketing function.

The Director will develop marketing strategy, oversee campaigns, strengthen audience development, coordinate digital marketing, support program and volunteer recruitment, increase awareness of MAP's initiatives, and build systems that turn organizational priorities into measurable marketing efforts.

This is not simply a promotional role.

The Director must understand the entire journey between someone first discovering MAP and eventually deciding to engage with the organization.

    Awareness → Interest → Understanding → Engagement → Action → Relationship → Retention

The Director will help MAP strengthen each stage of that journey.

    Marketing Strategy

Develop and lead MAP's organization-wide marketing strategy in alignment with communications and organizational priorities.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Develop annual and quarterly marketing priorities.
    • Identify priority audiences.
    • Establish campaign objectives.
    • Develop audience-specific strategies.
    • Coordinate marketing across channels.
    • Establish campaign timelines and deliverables.
    • Develop marketing calendars.
    • Identify opportunities for audience growth.
    • Recommend appropriate marketing channels and tactics.
    • Establish measurable marketing goals.
    • Evaluate results and adjust strategy accordingly.

Marketing should begin with a clear objective—not with deciding what to post.

    Audience Strategy

Help MAP better understand the different audiences it seeks to reach.

    Audiences may include:

    • Families
    • Youth
    • Volunteers
    • Mentors
    • Educators
    • Community organizations
    • Corporate partners
    • Nonprofit partners
    • Career professionals
    • Prospective donors
    • Foundations and supporters
    • Creative professionals
    • Internship candidates
    • Community members
    • Advocates
    • General supporters

    Develop audience journeys that consider:

    What does this audience need?

What might they already know about MAP?

What would make the mission relevant to them?

What information do they need before taking action?

    What barriers could prevent engagement?

What should happen after they respond?

MAP should not communicate with every audience in exactly the same way.

    Campaign Development & Management

Lead integrated marketing campaigns supporting organizational priorities such as:

    • Volunteer recruitment
    • Mentor recruitment
    • Program enrollment
    • Career Day participation
    • Internship opportunities
    • Fundraising
    • Partnerships
    • Events
    • Publications
    • Podcasts
    • Creative projects
    • Community initiatives
    • Educational campaigns
    • Organizational milestones
    • Special initiatives

    Establish a disciplined campaign process:

    Objective → Audience → Message → Offer → Channel → Creative → Launch → Engagement → Measurement → Learning

Each campaign should have a defined purpose, owner, timeline, audience, call to action, and method for evaluating performance.

    Digital Marketing

Strengthen MAP's digital marketing ecosystem across appropriate channels.

    Responsibilities may include:

    • Website marketing
    • Email marketing
    • Search visibility
    • Social media campaigns
    • Digital content distribution
    • Landing pages
    • Audience segmentation
    • Calls to action
    • Conversion pathways
    • Campaign tracking
    • Digital partnerships
    • Appropriate paid promotion when authorized

Work with PromiseStack and other appropriate teams when technology, website, analytics, or digital infrastructure support is required.

The objective is not simply to generate traffic.

It is to help the right people find MAP and understand what they can do next.

    Social Media Marketing

Partner closely with the Social Media Lead and PromiseVoice leadership to connect social content with broader marketing objectives.

The Director of Marketing establishes campaign strategy and audience objectives.

Social media leadership translates those priorities into effective platform-specific execution.

    Collaborate on:

    • Campaign concepts
    • Audience targeting
    • Content calendars
    • Calls to action
    • Social campaigns
    • Community engagement
    • Platform experimentation
    • Campaign measurement
    • Audience growth

Marketing and social media should reinforce one another without becoming the same function.

    Email Marketing & Audience Engagement

Help strengthen MAP's email marketing and audience-engagement strategy.

    Support:

    • Newsletter growth
    • Campaign emails
    • Volunteer recruitment
    • Event communications
    • Program promotion
    • Donor engagement
    • Partner communications
    • Audience segmentation
    • Re-engagement campaigns
    • Calls to action

Work with appropriate communications leaders to ensure messaging remains consistent with MAP's editorial voice and organizational standards.

    Program Marketing

Partner with PromisePrograms, PromiseLearning, PromiseRise, and other program leaders to help connect opportunities with intended participants.

    Support marketing for:

    • PromiseRooted
    • Virtual programming
    • Workshops
    • Educational programs
    • Career-readiness initiatives
    • Youth opportunities
    • Parent and family programs
    • Special events
    • Community activities

Program marketing should never promise experiences, services, outcomes, or availability that the program team has not confirmed.

    Marketing creates the connection.

    Program teams own the program.

    Volunteer & Talent Marketing

Develop strategies that strengthen MAP's ability to attract mission-aligned volunteers and professionals.

Partner with PromisePeople and division leaders on:

    • Volunteer recruitment campaigns
    • Leadership recruitment
    • Creative talent recruitment
    • Mentor recruitment
    • Professional volunteer outreach
    • Internship promotion
    • Candidate awareness
    • Recruitment-channel strategy

Analyze which messages and channels produce meaningful applicants rather than simply larger applicant counts.

    Fundraising & Supporter Marketing

Partner with PromiseGiving on marketing that supports fundraising and supporter engagement.

    The Director may help develop:

    • Giving campaigns
    • Donor acquisition initiatives
    • Fundraising communications
    • Campaign landing pages
    • Impact-focused marketing
    • Seasonal campaigns
    • Supporter journeys
    • Digital fundraising promotion

PromiseGiving owns fundraising strategy and donor stewardship.

Marketing helps ensure those opportunities reach and engage appropriate audiences.

    Partnership Marketing

Collaborate with PromiseBridge to support partnerships and external engagement.

Develop appropriate marketing materials and campaigns for:

    • Corporate engagement
    • Community partnerships
    • Professional networks
    • Collaborative initiatives
    • Institutional relationships
    • Partnership announcements
    • Joint campaigns

Ensure external collaborations accurately represent MAP's role, commitments, and mission.

    Brand & Creative Collaboration

Partner closely with PromiseBrands and PromiseStudios.

PromiseVoice helps determine what MAP needs to communicate.

Marketing determines who MAP needs to reach, why, through which channels, and toward what action.

PromiseBrands protects and develops MAP's brand expression.

PromiseStudios creates specialized visual, audio, film, animation, and multimedia work.

The Director of Marketing should bring these capabilities together through clear creative briefs and campaign strategy.

    A strong brief should identify:

    • Objective
    • Audience
    • Core message
    • Desired action
    • Channel
    • Deliverables
    • Timeline
    • Creative requirements
    • Success measures

Creative teams should understand why something is being created before being asked to create it.

    Marketing Analytics & Performance

Build a disciplined approach to marketing measurement.

    Track appropriate indicators such as:

    • Audience growth
    • Website traffic
    • Email engagement
    • Campaign reach
    • Click-through activity
    • Conversion
    • Volunteer inquiries
    • Applications
    • Program interest
    • Event registrations
    • Donations
    • Partnership inquiries
    • Returning audiences
    • Campaign-specific outcomes

Partner with PromiseMeasure when developing more sophisticated measurement frameworks.

The Director should help MAP distinguish among:

    Reach → Engagement → Conversion → Participation → Retention

A campaign with significant reach but no meaningful action may require a different strategy.

    Marketing Experiments & Learning

Build a culture of responsible experimentation.

    Test variables such as:

    • Messaging
    • Calls to action
    • Creative formats
    • Audience segments
    • Distribution channels
    • Timing
    • Landing pages
    • Email subject lines
    • Content formats

Document what MAP learns and use those findings to improve future campaigns.

Marketing should become smarter with every campaign.

    Marketing Systems & Infrastructure

    Develop scalable marketing systems, including:

    • Marketing calendars
    • Campaign briefs
    • Audience profiles
    • Campaign trackers
    • Asset libraries
    • Marketing templates
    • Approval workflows
    • Performance dashboards
    • Campaign archives
    • Marketing playbooks
    • Channel documentation

MAP should not have to reinvent its marketing process every time a new initiative launches.

    Ethical & Dignity-Centered Marketing

Ensure MAP's marketing reflects the dignity of children, youth, families, and communities.

Marketing should never depend on exploiting hardship.

    The Director must help ensure:

    • Stories are represented respectfully.
    • Appropriate permissions are obtained.
    • Privacy is protected.
    • Sensitive information is handled carefully.
    • Youth are never reduced to fundraising or marketing devices.
    • Claims about MAP's impact are supported appropriately.
    • Marketing does not exaggerate organizational capacity or outcomes.
    • Urgency does not override dignity.

The strongest marketing earns attention without compromising trust.

    Team Leadership

Build and develop MAP's marketing team.

    • Recruit marketing professionals and volunteers.
    • Establish roles and responsibilities.
    • Set priorities and deadlines.
    • Delegate meaningful ownership.
    • Conduct regular team meetings.
    • Review campaign development and execution.
    • Mentor emerging marketing professionals.
    • Provide constructive feedback.
    • Develop team capacity.
    • Establish accountability.
    • Celebrate strong performance and learning.

The Director should not become MAP's entire marketing department.

    The Director should build one.

    Cross-Divisional Collaboration

Marketing touches nearly every part of MAP, but that does not mean Marketing owns every initiative it promotes.

The Director should establish strong working relationships across the organization while respecting functional ownership and decision authority.

Marketing's role is to understand the organizational objective, identify the audience, develop the strategy, coordinate the message and channels, and measure whether the intended audience responded.

    Leadership Expectations

The Director of Marketing should be both strategic and practical.

The successful candidate can move from discussing organizational growth with leadership to reviewing a campaign brief, analyzing performance, helping a team refine messaging, and determining why an audience is not converting.

    The role requires:

    • Strategic thinking
    • Marketing judgment
    • Audience empathy
    • Creative thinking
    • Analytical ability
    • Strong writing
    • Project leadership
    • Team development
    • Cross-functional collaboration
    • Digital fluency
    • Organizational discipline
    • Curiosity and experimentation

    Qualifications

Strong candidates may have backgrounds in:

    • Marketing
    • Digital marketing
    • Nonprofit marketing
    • Integrated marketing
    • Growth marketing
    • Communications
    • Audience development
    • Brand marketing
    • Content marketing
    • Campaign management
    • Community engagement

    Candidates should demonstrate:

    • Experience developing marketing strategies or campaigns.
    • Understanding of audience segmentation and engagement.
    • Experience coordinating multichannel marketing.
    • Strong written communication.
    • Ability to develop clear campaign briefs.
    • Understanding of social and digital marketing.
    • Experience interpreting marketing analytics.
    • Strong project-management skills.
    • Ability to coordinate multiple initiatives and deadlines.
    • Ability to lead and develop a team.
    • Strong cross-functional collaboration.
    • Commitment to MAP's mission and dignity-centered values.

Experience in nonprofit organizations, education, youth development, social impact, community organizations, or mission-driven marketing is particularly valuable.

    What Success Looks Like

MAP develops a coherent marketing function rather than a collection of disconnected promotional activities.

    Priority audiences are clearly defined.

    Campaigns begin with objectives.

Teams understand who they are trying to reach.

    Creative requests become clearer.

    Marketing calendars provide visibility.

    Programs receive stronger promotional support.

    Volunteer recruitment becomes more intentional.

    Digital audiences grow meaningfully.

    Campaign performance is measured.

    Successful approaches are repeated.

    Weak approaches are reconsidered.

Marketing increasingly connects awareness to action.

And more people who encounter MAP understand not only what the organization does—but how they can become part of the mission.

    Why This Role Matters

A mission can be extraordinary and still remain invisible to the people who would care about it.

A family may be looking for support.

A professional may be willing to mentor.

A company may be searching for a meaningful community partner.

A volunteer may have exactly the skill MAP needs.

A donor may be looking for a mission they believe in.

Marketing helps create the moment when those paths meet.

The goal is not to make MAP louder.

It is to make MAP easier to discover, easier to understand, and easier to engage with.

    Commitment

    • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment
    • Fully remote, with NYC collaboration as needed
    • Regular meetings with PromiseVoice leadership
    • Regular communication with the marketing team
    • Participation in applicable cross-divisional planning
    • Ownership of agreed marketing priorities through completion
    • Consistent communication through MAP's approved platforms
    • Commitment to MAP's communications, privacy, safeguarding, and organizational standards

    What You'll Gain

    • Leadership experience building a nonprofit marketing function.
    • Opportunity to shape MAP's organization-wide marketing strategy.
    • Experience developing integrated campaigns across multiple channels.
    • Collaboration with communications, brand, creative, program, fundraising, partnership, and executive teams.
    • Opportunity to recruit and lead a marketing team.
    • Experience developing marketing systems and measurement practices.
    • Portfolio-building opportunities through mission-driven campaigns.
    • Professional references and recommendations based on demonstrated contribution.
    • Meaningful opportunity to connect more people with programs, opportunities, and a mission centered on children and families.
