Volunteer Online K-8 Tutor (seeking current high school students)

This is a remote, volunteer role for a Student Volunteer Tutor with Lumi Learning. Student Volunteer Tutors support K–8 students in a variety of subjects through one-on-one online tutoring sessions, tailoring their approach to each student’s learning style and needs. Responsibilities include preparing for sessions, delivering engaging instruction, monitoring student progress over time, and offering constructive feedback to help students build both skills and confidence. Tutors will also communicate professionally with Lumi Learning leadership staff to ensure smooth scheduling, student safety, and a high-quality tutoring experience.

This role is open to current high school students. Candidates under 18 are preferred. Tutors who are 18 or older must complete a background check before working with students.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in high school (required); candidates under 18 preferred.
• Strong academic performance: 3.5/4.0 GPA or above OR honor roll (or equivalent) (required).
• Demonstrated subject strength and the ability to explain concepts clearly and patiently.
• Ability to adapt tutoring methods to diverse learning styles and student needs.
• Ability to prepare and use simple, effective lesson plans or session outlines that support understanding and retention.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills for working with younger students and collaborating with the Lumi Learning team.
• Dedication to supporting student development with patience, empathy, and enthusiasm for education.
• Reliability, organization, and professionalism—consistent attendance and timely communication are essential.
• Prior tutoring/teaching/mentoring experience is preferred but not required; training and resources will be provided.
• Access to a reliable device, stable internet, and a quiet, appropriate space for remote sessions.

Additional Requirements & Expectations

• Background Check: Required for tutors 18+ prior to being matched with students.
• Student Safety & Professional Conduct: Tutors must follow Lumi Learning policies, including maintaining appropriate boundaries and using approved platforms/tools for sessions and communication.
• Scheduling & Time Commitment: Flexible and based on availability, but consistency is strongly preferred (e.g., weekly sessions).
• Volunteer Role: This is an unpaid position; service/volunteer hours may be available depending on your school’s requirements.
