Mission
To continue the legacy of Michael Reese Hospital through supporting research, education, and community service through relationships that foster quality health care.
Vision
Our vision is excellent care for all patients, regardless of demographic conditions, in the tradition of the former Michael Reese Hospital.
Our Story
Founded in 1881, Chicago’s Michael Reese Hospital was a private institution operating on the principle that patients were best served when research, education and clinical care all came together to create the best possible environment for care. When the hospital was sold to a for-profit company in 1998, the hospital’s medical staff started The Michael Reese Research and Education Foundation to continue to support those founding principles. Since the hospital closed in 2009, the Foundation has continued its work to keep the Michael Reese vision alive through support of dozens of other worthy organizations. Examples include the University of Illinois at Chicago, where the Foundation established five endowed professorships and provided bridge funding for programs that have returned more than $26 million dollars in NIH research support; and partnerships with the Medical Organization for Latino Advancement (MOLA) as well as the I AM ABEL FOUNDATION for scholarships to college aged students from Chicago to California promoting careers across the spectrum of medical care for black and Hispanic students. Internally, the Foundation supports an HIV clinic and a breast and cervical cancer screening programs that provide care to underserved populations. Over the last 16 years the Foundation has provided more than $10,609,524 dollars to Chicago area programs to maintain the Reese vision of optimal patient care.
The Opportunity
The Foundation is seeking several new Chicago-based board members to help the foundation survive and thrive into its next phase. We are looking for qualified, passionate leaders with an interest in Michael Reese’s vision and an interest in healthcare, health equity, and innovation. We are looking for board members with all skill sets, but have a particular interest in candidates with experience in finance/accounting, communications, and marketing.
