Citizenship Class Volunteer Instructor

Purpose of the Position

Support adult learners preparing for the U.S. naturalization process by teaching citizenship classes in a welcoming, structured, and supportive environment. Volunteers help students build English language skills, civics knowledge, and confidence for the USCIS interview and exam.

Key Responsibilities

• Teach weekly citizenship classes following the program’s curriculum and guidelines.
• Prepare lesson plans and activities that support reading, writing, speaking, and civics content.
• Create an inclusive, respectful, and encouraging classroom environment.
• Track student attendance and progress as requested by the program.
• Communicate with the volunteer coordinator regarding class needs, absences, or concerns.
• Participate in required training sessions and occasional program meetings.
• Represent the library and program professionally when interacting with students and the community.

Time Commitment

• Minimum commitment: 4 months
• 1–2 classes per week, depending on the schedule
• Each class: Approx.. 2 hours, plus approximately 1 hour of preparation
• Attend required volunteer training (initial and ongoing)

Qualifications

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

• Comfortable speaking in front of a group
• Ability to follow a structured curriculum
• Patience, cultural sensitivity, and a supportive attitude
• No prior teaching experience required; training is provided
• English proficiency required; bilingual skills are a plus

• Initial training on curriculum, teaching strategies, and USCIS requirements
• Ongoing workshops and support from program staff
