    Descrição

Let Us Contribute Initiative: A project fiscally sponsored by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit The Let Us Contribute Initiative (LUCI) is an incarcerated-founded and led initiative fighting crime through economic justice. We are committed to building power behind the walls by advancing cooperative reentry, in-prison education, and legislative advocacy that centers the agency and leadership of incarcerated people.

LUCI emerged from a fundamental truth: those most impacted by mass incarceration must lead, not just be consulted. While many institutions exalt “the voices of the most impacted,” few reflect or accurately convey consensus perspectives within incarcerated communities. Social movements are often governed by unexamined orthodoxies and extractive relationships, while foundations and advocacy organizations unintentionally reinforce inequality through selective inclusion, response bias, and gatekeeping.

LUCI exists to change these norms. Until more people living within the carceral system hold positions of actual power, even the most well-intentioned actors risk replicating the very harms they seek to dismantle.

    About the Role

Guided by the leadership of incarcerated people and grounded in principles of solidarity economics, LUCI’s current strategy centers on:

    1. Incubating green worker cooperatives inside and outside of prison

    2. Expanding in reach education to build advocacy and economic literacy across California prisons

    3. Legislative advocacy for policies that create pathways for cooperative development inside prisons

We are seeking a volunteer Director of Engagement to coordinate and grow LUCI’s statewide coalition of mission-aligned organizations, advocates, and volunteers. This remote role will work closely with and report directly to LUCI’s incarcerated Executive Director, must be able and willing to make visits to our team inside of San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, must be comfortable navigating systems of accountability to the broader coalition, and will play a key role in implementing the coalition’s vision for system change.

A minimum six-month commitment is required, averaging around 10 hours per week.

Role Details Position: Director of Engagement

Employer: Let Us Contribute Initiative, a fiscally sponsored project of Acterra: Action for a Healthy Planet (Nonprofit Tax ID 23-7064937)

    Employment Designation: Volunteer

Location: Remote, San Francisco Bay Area (with some travel) Let Us Contribute Initiative, a fiscally sponsored project of Acterra (Tax ID 23-7064937) p. 1/3 Time

    Commitment: ~10 hours per week

    Duration: 6-month minimum volunteer commitment

Reporting: Reports to LUCI’s incarcerated Executive Director; accountable to the coalition

    Core Responsibilities

    ● Coalition Building: Convene and coordinate LUCI’s statewide coalition; facilitate meetings; cultivate strong relationships among partners across advocacy, reentry, and cooperative sectors.

    ● Strategic Coordination: Help operationalize LUCI’s three-fold work strategy by organizing efforts across co-op incubation, inreach, and legislative advocacy campaigns.

    ● Internal Communications: Maintain shared infrastructure (e.g., meeting agendas, communications platforms, shared documents) and support clear communication between incarcerated LUCI leadership and free-world partners.

    ● Volunteer Coordination: Support recruitment and onboarding of additional volunteers and help identify future coalition facilitators and committee members.

    ● Fundraising: Support grassroots fundraising and grant development in collaboration with LUCI’s leadership and partners. What Core Responsibilities May Look Like in Practice ● Work as a team member with lead staff to meet coalition goals.

    ● Help identify funding opportunities, co-write grant proposals, and steward relationships with values-aligned funders. Ensure that LUCI’s fundraising efforts remain accountable to its incarcerated leadership and are guided by the coalition’s collective goals rather than external priorities.
