About Women of Color on the Move

Women of Color on the Move (WOCOTM) is a nonprofit public benefit organization committed to empowering historically marginalized communities by advancing health equity, economic empowerment, education, and social justice. Since its founding in 2014, WOCOTM has delivered community-based education, advocacy, prevention, and support programs addressing issues such as substance abuse, maternal and child health, youth development, financial literacy, and community engagement both in the U.S. and internationally. Our vision is to create a world where all individuals, regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic background, have access to opportunities to thrive.

This mission-driven organization seeks a skilled legal professional to serve in a strategic volunteer leadership role on the Board of Directors.

    Position Overview

We are seeking a Community Board Member who brings lived experience, authentic community insight, and a strong commitment to equitable leadership.

This role ensures that the voices, needs, and priorities of the communities we serve are meaningfully represented in organizational decision-making. As a member of the Board of Directors, the Community Board Member upholds fiduciary responsibilities while contributing to strategic direction, accountability, and mission advancement.

This is a non-paid, volunteer board leadership position.

Why This Is a Meaningful Opportunity

Serving as a Community Board Member offers a unique opportunity to:

      • Ensure community voices and lived experiences shape organizational strategy and decision-making.
      • Influence programs and initiatives that directly impact historically marginalized communities.
      • Strengthen transparency, accountability, and trust between the organization and the community.
      • Build board-level governance experience in a mission-driven nonprofit.
      • Advocate for culturally responsive, equity-centered leadership practices.
      • Collaborate with leaders committed to advancing social justice and community empowerment.

This role is ideal for an individual who is deeply connected to the community and passionate about ensuring nonprofit leadership reflects and responds to real community needs.

    Key Responsibilities

    Governance & Fiduciary Oversight

      • Uphold fiduciary duties of care, loyalty, and obedience in all Board decisions and actions.
      • Actively participate in Board meetings, committee assignments, and governance initiatives.
      • Contribute to strategic planning, policy development, and oversight responsibilities.
      • Review organizational performance, including financial reports, program outcomes, and impact metrics.
      • Support compliance with laws, regulations, and ethical standards applicable to nonprofit organizations.

    Community Representation & Advocacy

      • Serve as a liaison between the organization and the communities it serves.
      • Bring community perspectives, concerns, and lived experiences into Board discussions.
      • Advocate for the organization’s mission, programs, and values within relevant networks.
      • Support community-informed decision-making and culturally responsive practices.
      • Assist in strengthening partnerships, outreach efforts, and stakeholder engagement.

    Organizational Support & Leadership

      • Support fundraising, outreach, and resource development efforts as appropriate.
      • Promote transparency, trust, and accountability between the organization and the community.
      • Participate in Board self-assessment and governance improvement efforts.
      • Serve as an ambassador for the organization at events and public engagements when requested.

Additional duties may be assigned as organizational needs evolve.

    Volunteer Role Notice

This is a non-paid, volunteer leadership role. Individuals serving in this capacity are not employees of the organization and do not receive financial compensation or employment benefits. Time commitment expectations and responsibilities will be mutually agreed upon in writing.
