Celebrate Orca Recovery Day at Edgewood's Nelson Nature Park - Join PCD's Oct. 17 Work Party!

Volunteer with Pierce Conservation District from 9 AM to 12 PM on Saturday, October 17th, at Edgewood's Nelson Nature Park as we commemorate Orca Recovery Day 2026! Activities will include caring for existing plants, removing invasive plant species, and spreading mulch to prevent regrowth of weeds. This work supports water quality, local wildlife (like orca and their preferred food, salmon), and our essential pollinators. Exact meeting location will be provided after signing up.

What will volunteers be doing at the event?

While the exact tasks at hand vary through the year, our projects focus on improving the open spaces, forests, and parks in our local cities. Healthy ecosystems and thriving wetlands are vital to our community because they absorb and naturally filter rain water, produce clean oxygen, provide living spaces for wildlife, and create a place for people to connect with the outdoors.

In order to create healthy forests and riparian zones, the work can include:

• Caring for existing plantings
• Spreading mulch to help mitigate weed pressure and stress during both the dry and wet seasons.
• Removing invasive plant species such as English ivy, Himalayan blackberry, bindweed/Morning Glory, English holly, English hawthorn, scotch broom, foxglove, Canada thistle, etc.

For your safety and comfort please bring:

• Clothing that can get dirty
• Long pants and sleeves
• Sturdy shoes (closed toed shoes required, no sandals or flats)
• Rain gear and warm layers (the event will happen rain or shine)
• Full water bottle!
